Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 4 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.
The country of Boliyedaluo is more than three thousand li around. The great capital city of the country is fourteen or fifteen li around. The land is fit for grain, and winter wheat is plentiful. There is a rice of another kind, which is harvested sixty days after it is sown. Cattle and sheep are many, and flowers and fruits are few. The climate is hot and burning, and the customs are hard and fierce. The people do not honor learning and the arts, and they believe in and serve the ways of others. The king is of the Vaishya stock. His nature is brave and stern, and he has many plans of war. There are eight monasteries, already much fallen and broken. The monks are few, and they study the Lesser Vehicle. There are more than ten temples of the gods and more than a thousand followers of other ways.
從此東行五百餘里,至秣菟羅國。
From here one goes east more than five hundred li and comes to the country of Motuluo.
