Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 7 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

The country of Nibolo is more than four thousand li around, and it lies among the snowy mountains. The great capital city of the country is more than twenty li around. Mountains and streams run on one after another. The land is good for grain, and flowers and fruits are many. It yields red copper, yaks and mingming birds. For money they use red copper coins. The climate is cold and bitter and the customs are rough and crooked. The people are hard and wild by nature, and they are light and thin in faith and in duty. They have no learning and no arts, but they are skilled with their hands. Their looks are ugly and worn, and they believe in the false and the true together. Monasteries and temples of the gods stand wall to wall and corner to corner. The monks are more than two thousand, and they work at both the Greater Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle and study them side by side. The followers of other ways and of other learning are more than can be counted.

In recent times there was a king whose name was Yangshufamo. His learning was great and he was clear and wise, and he himself wrote the Shengming lun. He held learning in honor and revered virtue, and his name was known far and near.

Interlinear notes 1

唐言光胄。

In the language of the Tang it is Guangzhou.

3The pool where fire rises

都城東南有小水池,以人火投之,水即焰起。更投餘物,亦變為火。

Southeast of the capital city there is a small pool of water. If a man throws fire into it, flames rise at once from the water. If he throws in anything else, that too turns into fire.

從此復還吠舍厘河,南渡殑伽河,至摩揭陁國。

From here one returns again to the river of Feisheli, and crossing the Qingqie river to the south one comes to the country of Mojietuo.
