The Country of Gongyutuo
The country of Gongyutuo is more than a thousand li around. The great capital city of the country is more than twenty li around. It lies close on a corner of the sea, and hills and mounds stand in row upon row. The land is low and damp, and they sow and reap in season. The climate is warm and hot, and the customs are brave and fierce. Their bodies are large and their faces are dark. They have manners and right dealing in a rough way and are not much given to cheating. As for their writing, it is the same as Central India, but their speech and the turn of their voices are rather different. They honor and revere other ways and do not believe in the Law of the Buddha. There are more than a hundred temples of the gods and more than ten thousand followers of other ways. Within the borders of the country there are several tens of small cities, set against the mountains and the ridges and holding the place where the sea comes in. The cities are strong and steep and their soldiers are bold and brave, so their power stands out among the borders around them and they have no strong enemy. The country lies on the shore of the sea and has many rare treasures. Conches and shells and pearls are what they use for money. Great blue elephants are bred there, and men ride them and reach far places.
