4The place where Chenna made the Yinming lun
Going southwest for more than twenty li from the monastery of the arhat Suoxing, one comes to a lone hill. On the ridge of the hill there is a stone stupa, and it was here that the bodhisattva Chenna made the Yinming lun. The bodhisattva Chenna took up the way after the Buddha had left the world and put on the dyed robe. His wisdom and his vow were wide and great, and the strength of his understanding was deep and firm. He pitied the world for having nothing to lean on, and he thought to spread the holy teaching. He held that the treatise on reason was deep in its words and wide in its principle, so that learners spent their labor for nothing and could hardly bring the work to an end. So he hid his traces among lonely crags and lodged his spirit in still concentration, weighing the gain and the harm of writing, and considering how full or how short the words and the meaning should be. At this time the cliffs and the valleys rang, the mist and the clouds changed their colors, and the god of the mountain lifted the bodhisattva up several hundred feet and cried out these words, "Long ago the Buddha, the World Honored One, used skillful means well to guide living things. Out of a heart of compassion he spoke the Yinming lun, gathering up its wondrous principle and searching out its faint words to the depths. When the Tathagata passed into stillness, the great meaning died away and was cut off. Now the bodhisattva Chenna is far and deep in blessing and in wisdom, and has reached the holy intent. On this day the treatise on reason will be spread wide again." Then the bodhisattva sent out a great bright light that lit up the dark and hidden places. At that time the king of this country felt a deep reverence rise in him. When he saw the form of this light, he thought that the bodhisattva had entered the diamond concentration, and he asked him to witness the fruit of no birth. Chenna said, "What I looked into when I entered concentration was how to unfold a deep sutra. My heart is set on right awakening. I did not wish for the fruit of no birth." The king said, "The fruit of no birth is what all the holy ones look up to with joy. It cuts off desire in the three worlds and goes clear through the three clear knowledges. This is a great thing. I beg you to witness it quickly." At that time Chenna was glad in his heart at the king's asking, and he was about to witness and receive the holy fruit of one who has no more to learn. Then the bodhisattva Miaojixiang knew it and thought it a pity. Wishing to warn him, he snapped his fingers to wake him and told him, "What a pity. Why would you throw away a wide and great heart and take up a narrow and mean purpose? Why would you follow a mind that is good only for itself and cast off the vow to carry others across as well? If you wish to do good and bring gain, you should spread abroad and expound the Yuqie shidi lun that the bodhisattva Cishi made, and so guide and draw on those who learn after you. The gain from it is very great." The bodhisattva Chenna received the pointed teaching with respect and went about it as he was told. Then he thought deeply and studied closely, and he made the treatise on reason wider. Still he feared that learners would take fright at its faint writing and its short words, so he raised up its great meaning and gathered in its faint words and made the Yinming lun to lead on those who came after. From that time on the great work of the Yuqie was unfolded and made known, and among his disciples there were those whom that age knew.
