The Country of Zhuliye
The country of Zhuliye is two thousand four or five hundred li around. The great capital city of the country is more than ten li around. The open country is empty and wide, the marshes and the pools are waste and wild, the households that live there are few, and bands of robbers go about openly. The climate is warm and hot, and the customs are crooked and thievish. The people are rough and keen by nature, and they honor and believe in other ways. The monasteries have fallen and are broken down, but there are still some monks. The temples of the gods are several tens, and most of the followers of other ways there go naked.
2The stupa of King Wuyou
Not far southeast of the city there is a stupa raised by King Wuyou. Long ago the Tathagata once showed great divine power in this place. He spoke the deep and wondrous law, broke down the followers of other ways, and carried across gods and men.
3Tipo and the arhat: the seventh question
Not far west of the city there is an old monastery. It is the place where the bodhisattva Tipo debated with an arhat. At first the bodhisattva Tipo heard that in this monastery there was the arhat Wadaluo, who had gained the six spiritual powers and possessed the eight liberations. So he came seeking him from far off, to see his bearing and his way. When he reached the monastery he stayed the night with the arhat. The arhat had few wants and knew when he had enough, and he kept only one couch. When Tipo came there was nothing to serve him for a seat, so the arhat gathered fallen leaves and pointed him to them to sit on. The arhat entered concentration, and only in the middle of the night did he come out of it. Then Tipo set out his doubts and asked to have them settled, and the arhat answered each hard question as it came. Tipo pressed him again on what he heard, and after the seventh turn the arhat closed his mouth and could not answer. He secretly used the strength of his spiritual power, went to the Dushiduo heaven, and asked Cishi. Cishi answered him, and then told him, "That Tipo has practiced through kalpas beyond counting, and in the worthy kalpa he will take up the place of a Buddha. It is not a thing that you can know. You should show him deep respect." In the time it takes to snap the fingers the arhat was back on his own seat, and now he pressed the wondrous meaning down and raised it up again and cut the faint words apart and explained them. Tipo said, "This is an explanation from the holy wisdom of the bodhisattva Cishi. How could you, kind sir, have searched it out in such detail?" The arhat said, "It is so. It is truly as you say." Then he left his seat and gave thanks with a bow, and honored him deeply and sighed in wonder.
