Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 11 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

The country of Gongjiannabuluo is more than five thousand li around. The great walled capital of the country is more than thirty li around. The land is rich and fat, and sowing and reaping grow thick and full. The climate is warm and hot, and the customs of the people are hasty and fierce. Their faces are dark, and their feelings and their nature are rough and violent. They love the work of learning and hold virtue and the arts high. There are more than a hundred monasteries and more than ten thousand monks, and they study both vehicles, the Greater and the Lesser, with equal effort. There are several hundred temples of the gods, and the followers of other ways live mixed among them.

2The jeweled crown of the crown prince Yiqieyicheng

Beside the walled city of the royal palace there is a great monastery with more than three hundred monks, and truly they are all men of high gifts. The great shrine of the monastery is more than a hundred feet high. Within it there is the jeweled crown of the crown prince Yiqieyicheng, a little less than two feet high, adorned with rare jewels and kept in a jeweled box. Whenever a fast day comes it is brought out and set on a high seat, and when offerings of incense and flowers are made to it, at times it gives out a bright light.

3The image of the bodhisattva Cishi carved in sandalwood

In the great monastery beside the city there is a shrine more than fifty feet high, and within it there is an image of the bodhisattva Cishi carved in sandalwood, more than ten feet high. Sometimes, when a fast day comes, a divine light shines from it. It was made by the arhat Wenerbaiyi.

4The grove of duoluo trees — leaves for writing on

Not far north of the city there is a grove of duoluo trees, more than thirty li around. Their leaves are long and broad and their color is glossy and bright, and in all the countries, when men copy out writing, there is none that does not choose them and use them. In the grove there is a stupa, and it is the place where the four Buddhas of the past sat and left the traces of their walking back and forth. Beside it is the stupa that holds the relics left by the arhat Wenerbaiyi.

5The stupa that holds the relics of the Tathagata

Not far east of the city there is a stupa. Its base has already leaned and sunk, and what is left stands three fathoms high. It is heard from the records of former men that they said, "Within this there are relics of the Tathagata, and sometimes, when a fast day comes, a holy light shines from it." Long ago the Tathagata preached the Law here and showed the power of his divine gifts and saved the many living beings.

6Where Wenerbaiyi showed his divine power

Not far southwest of the city there is a stupa more than a hundred feet high, and King Wuyou built it. This is the place where the arhat Wenerbaiyi showed his great divine power and taught and saved living beings. Beside it there is a monastery, but only its foundations are left, and that arhat built it.

From here one goes northwest into great forest and open country, where fierce beasts do violent harm and bands of robbers are cruel and savage. Going two thousand four or five hundred li, one comes to the country of Mohelacha.
