Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 3 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

1Green Willow

The green willow — what is to be done? Swaying softly, it leans on the apricot blossom Paired with the wine-shop banner, it sways there jealous of the dancing, it brushes the courtesans' house After the rain it can hardly bear its own drooping before the wind it lets itself slant as it will If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it the season swiftly slips out of step and is gone

2Fragrant Grass

The fragrant grass — what is to be done? The noble youth's lament has not yet ceased Stamping and singing, the heart surges most of all playing at contests, we vie and grow noisy On the green blanket even the mist is warm and green skirts slant along the road If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it where will you boast of all this splendour?

3Red Apricot Blossom

The red apricot blossom — what is to be done? The flowering garden much torments the heart The dew-soaked clusters have heaped up tears of blood the sunlit calyxes spoil their red complexion Today the blossoms fill the tree but tomorrow morning the fruit will fill the branches If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it you will only hold your regret and follow after

4Red Peach Blossom

The red peach blossom — what is to be done? Smiling faintly, it slants out beyond the bamboo Thick on every branch, it has sprinkled blood reflected on the tree, it steams its own sunset glow Its shadow brushes the road that seeks the immortals its fragrance is shared out to the carriage choosing a son-in-law If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it it will fall to mud and sand in the wind and rain

5Plum Blossom

The plum blossom — what is to be done? In the empty yard snow-like clusters burst open The tree that shares my surname is loveliest of all and last year's blossoms are still left on it The green leaves set each other off for the first time and the jade-like bearing is doubled exactly If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it to whom will you boast of your pleasures?

6Cherry Blossom

The cherry blossom — what is to be done? How to bear how much of it has fallen to the ground? The heartless oriole shakes it down and the trusty butterfly comes and passes by Slender leaves hide the stems a little and the thick blossoms crowd up and weigh the branch down If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it after it falls you will sigh long and in vain
