Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 3 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

1Green Willow

The green willow — what is to be done? In the mad wind the blossoms dance in confusion Blue mist hangs over the north-and-south road and in the setting sun stand two or three houses The dense leaves hide the oriole and are dark the supple branches brush the horse and slant aside If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it your greying temple hair has already slipped out of step and gone

2Fragrant Grass

The fragrant grass — what is to be done? The flowing sun passes just on time I go out to the pond's edge and chant at my ease spread the ground for a mat and grow drunk and noisy Fine dew falls drop by drop a light wind slants by in soft gusts If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it you will grow old forlorn in the capital

3Red Apricot Blossom

The red apricot blossom — what is to be done? In the evening sun much regret has congealed Prettily it holds a deep draught of flowering intent and secretly learns the drunken cheek and is red If you would let the blossoms have the tree to themselves you must surely put off the filling of the branches with fruit If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it the Maker of things too would find him tiresome

4Red Peach Blossom

The red peach blossom — what is to be done? Before the gate it slants, set off against the willow The road loses itself in the screening groves of Jingu (金谷) the sky has lost the glow of Chicheng (赤城) The dancing girl pins it in her cloud-like coil of hair the pleasure-seeker drives his mother-of-pearl carriage If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it those flowering cheeks will soon be buried in the sand

5Plum Blossom

The plum blossom — what is to be done? Lightly and finely it has woven its soft clusters Who held back a thousand flakes of snow and changed them into flowers of full measure? The jade-like face loves its own beauty and adds no red powder to it If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it with what then will you boast of your young days?

6Cherry Blossom

The cherry blossom — what is to be done? Its thick fragrance is especially abundant Filling the branches, happily it has not yet fallen but who will load up wine and come calling? The dancing butterfly covets the fragrant stamens the flitting oriole strikes the green branch If you cannot follow the spring and enjoy it you will turn your head and hold a sigh in vain
