Dongguk Isangguk Jip (Collected Works of Minister Yi of the Eastern Country) Former Collection, Book 17 The collected writings of Yi Gyubo of Goryeo, gathered and cut in woodblock by his son Yi Ham in 1241 and revised and enlarged by his grandson Yi Ikbae in 1251. It holds poems and rhapsodies, memorials and reports sent up to the king, records written for temples and pagodas, stele and tomb inscriptions, letters and prefaces, and the state letters that passed to and from the Mongols during the invasions. The Lay of King Dongmyeong, which sings the founder of Goguryeo, stands in volume 3 of the first collection, and the daily life of a man who called himself the White Cloud Layman — with his wine, his zither and his verse — fills the later collection. The book closes with the last poem he wrote as his eyes failed and he laid down the brush, and with the dirge and tomb inscription others made for him after his death.

Lord Yu loves guests and has inclined the fame of an age toward him, and he summoned the officials to come from the Phoenix Pool (鳳池). At first he poured shallowly into small cups, but when we were half drunk he called for the crystal cup to be brought out. Within it the goose-yellow wine lit up the whole body of it, so that even as one looked it seemed not to be at the bottom of the cup. Its brightness was as though dew filled an immortal's palm; its clearness as though bright water were held in a moon-mirror (方諸); and again as though the ice on a stream had cracked a little, with the rippling grain of the water shaking its green light. Holding it, one doubts of oneself that it will easily melt, and once lifted dares not keep hold of it even for a moment. I fear that Haeyak (海若) and Pungi (馮夷) play a thousand tricks each day: the sorcery and strangeness within the water are truly astonishing. Suddenly they scooped up the frosted wave and pressed it into a lump, and in an instant it congealed and formed a flesh like jade. A mad wind blew it out and dropped it on the river sand, and a single heap of flaked snow lay upon the blue sedge. A traveler by the sea saw it once and put it in his sleeve and came home, and day after day plotted to what use he might put it. To break it up and make prayer beads of it would be truly a pity; to carve it into a pillow for sleeping would also be unfitting. Grinding it a thousand times and polishing it a hundred, he made it a cup, so glossy and smooth that it is the fitter for pouring fragrant wine. How should a vulgar man keep a numinous thing? If he is not the right man, he only defiles himself with it. The Six Spirits (六丁) seized it and sent it to your house: apart from your worth, where should it attach itself? And again I fear: in the glass cup of the Royal Mansion of the Grotto Heaven (洞天王府) they hold the jade-like gruel that does not die for a thousand years, and Heaven, to have your span of life end together with heaven and earth, has it commanded an immortal maiden to send it and press you to taste? And that the remaining richness reaches even an old man of one office, so that together with our company our faces may turn back to childhood? Why did Wang Ryeol (王烈) alone drink the marrow within the stone and not share it with Hyegang (嵇康)? My lord, my lord, keep yourself well. When there is wine, always tip up this cup. How should even the sun and moon make me old?
