Lord Yu Answered, So I Again Used His Rhymes and Respectfully Replied
Have you not seen? In the time when the five marquises scorched the sky with wealth and rank, they made hills of meat and ponds of wine. I suppose their cups and trays and vessels were sumptuous in the extreme, but I have not heard that they made a wine cup of crystal. Yesterday in the Western Wall office (西垣) the sweat ran down my body, and the steaming heat was as if I sat at the bottom of a deep steamer; then suddenly at your house I drained the crystal cup, and my whole body was as fresh as if it held cold ice. Do not sigh that you could not meet the season for breaking red apricot blossoms, and do not regret that you could not call a beauty who overthrows kingdoms. How should one combine wearing cash at the waist with riding a crane? Already I am moved by your deep kindness and have graven it in me. To chase gold and carve jade is a child's play, and compared with what you hold precious it is truly shabby. I, fingering it at first, was startled and nearly threw it down: how should chapped hands trespass on so smooth a grain? From of old, meeting and parting are like gathering sand, so it would be well to invite a lovely one to sing "Treading the Sedge" (踏莎行). Do not let the inside of the cup be empty for even one day: in this floating life of a hundred years, what is there but drinking? Though you scatter a thousand pieces of gold, do not begrudge it: the road to the Land of Drunkenness (醉鄕) is level — where would you leave it and go? This cup and this wine are still vivid before my eyes: it was green-jade wine, dimly wrapped in mica (雲母). Noble houses count it noble to keep rare things, and now and then are often defiled by things beyond their measure. That a wine cup, however sumptuous, does no harm, is because from the first it is attached to the wish to comfort a guest. How should even Heaven let your cup run dry? From time to time it will send the Queen Mother of the West to add immortals' wine. I am glad that there was a deep promise when we came: pouring shallow and singing low, you pressed me to taste. Ah, I am already an old man of white beard, and this year my teeth have gone and my head too has turned childlike. No more of the elegance of my young days is left me: with what face should I keep company again with red skirts? If there were one like Yang Hyeonbo (羊玄保) in the seat, I would match male against female and lay him low. Even with the courage that is left, tipping the cup is enough to see out my old age.
