Written on the Field-View Pavilion (野景樓) of the monk Ui (誼) at Jeongcheonsa (井泉寺) in Hwangnyeo題黃驪井泉寺誼師野景樓
Our master is clean-handed in the taking of things Yet with streams and hills alone he does not shrink from greed Sheer and high he has thrown up a single pavilion And driven in all the scenery to be wrapped within it In the plowing under a fine rain the village mood is glad In the woodcutter's pipe at sundown the field joy ripens Morning and evening the birdsong is in the trees beyond the gate Then as now the shadows of men fall on the pond by the road The geese returning against the clouds work front and rear into cunning shapes The gulls that come out of the water and float are suddenly two or three The quality of the land must be judged by the richness of the fields And the temple's name lies wholly in its brimming well The moon peers into the deep chamber while the idle monk dozes The valley answers the empty hall while the seated guest talks Must a cool hall for cooling off the heat be on the north A high pavilion that calls the wind is fittest on the south The glow in the cleared sky is redder than fire The smoke above the dawn tavern is blue as indigo You took this clear and secluded place early and delight in it yourself I came late to this fine view and am ashamed To wash the heart and enter the society seems to be hiding together Drawing water and brewing the tea I could still manage If there is ever a place to pierce the head-phrase (話頭) and taste it Then call the old layman Pang now and then and let him come to the rite
