A Letter in Reply to Director Pak Inseok
On a certain day of a certain month. Your nephew Pak Mongju (朴夢周) arrived, and I received the letter you sent. By it I learned that your circumstances are at peace, and I heard in full besides of your victory in battle. My gladness and my comfort are together so earnest that words cannot tell them.
Having heard before that Your Excellency had taken alive forty of the noted brigands and sent a dispatch posting to the king, I at once wrote a letter of congratulation and sent it by a messenger who happened to be going. I do not yet know whether that letter reached you.
And now I hear besides that you braved arrow and stone in your own person and fought with all your strength till the day was done and took more than twenty brigands, and sent your aides and subordinate officers to go to the palace and present the captives. Ah, how fine! How is it that great victories and repeated triumphs come so thick as this?
I heard it and rejoiced as though it were my own body that had gained it. Yet not knowing in what ground you had fought and what brigands you had taken, my heart itched not a little.
Only on receiving the letter in your own hand did I get the details of it, and besides, leaning upon Pak Mongju, I heard the whole course of the battle. For ground there is nothing steeper than Icheon (梨川), and for a chief of brigands there is none swifter than Kim Sun (金順). Had that man been allowed to take that ground first, I think that not even ten thousand soldiers would have dared to withstand him. And yet Your Excellency was able to take him alive. How should this not be that your letters and arms, your wisdom and your devising, rise far above other men's?
While I was in the midst of marveling without end, I heard that your son has received office in the Inner Court (內庭), and I am the more glad and count it a happy thing. I only face eastward and bow twice and congratulate you from afar.
Staff Officer Hwangbo (皇甫) so-and-so, and Ham Yeonsu (咸延壽) and Jeong Geukgwang (鄭克光) and the rest, have also been raised in rank and advanced in place. The state's rewarding of service and repaying of labor being such as this, this too is a thing to be congratulated.
When shall we be able to meet and talk it over in detail? I think it will be so with Your Excellency too. Being in haste I cannot set forth all that I hold within. Here I leave off. So-and-so knocks his brow upon the ground.
