Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1Who Will Give Rise to True Faith?

Subhuti said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! Will there be beings who hear such words and passages as these and give rise to true faith?"

To give rise to a mind of right faith is the rarest thing of all.

2A Single Thought of Pure Faith

The Buddha said to Subhuti, "Do not speak so. Even in the fifth five-hundred-year period after the Tathagata has passed into nirvana, there will be those who keep the precepts and cultivate merit, who give rise to a believing mind at these passages and take them as true.

Know this: such a person has planted good roots not with one Buddha, or two, or three or four or five Buddhas, but has already planted every kind of good root in the presence of measureless thousands upon thousands of Buddhas. That is why, hearing these passages, they give rise to pure faith even in a single thought.

Subhuti! The Tathagata knows them all and sees them all. All these beings gain merit as measureless as this. Why is this? Because in these beings there is no longer any mark of a self, mark of a person, mark of a being, or mark of a life span."

3No Mark of Dharma, No Mark of Non-Dharma

"They have no mark of dharma, and no mark of non-dharma either. Why is this? Because if these beings grasp at marks in their minds, they are clinging to a self, a person, a being, and a life span."

4The Parable of the Raft

"If they grasp the mark of dharma, they cling to a self, a person, a being, and a life span; and if they grasp the mark of non-dharma, they cling just the same to a self, a person, a being, and a life span. Therefore they should not grasp at dharma, and should not grasp at non-dharma.

For this reason the Tathagata always says, 'You monks, know that my teaching of the Dharma is like the parable of the raft. Even the Dharma must be let go — how much more what is not the Dharma.'"
