Section 9 — One mark, no mark
1The Thought of a Srotapanna
"Subhuti! What do you think? Does a srotapanna think, 'I have attained the fruit of a srotapanna'?"
Interlinear notes 1
This one mark has from the first no form.
2There Is Nowhere Entered
Subhuti said, "No, World-Honored One! Why is this? Because a srotapanna is called one who has entered the stream (入流), yet there is nowhere entered. Entering neither form, sound, scent, taste, touch, nor dharmas — that is why he is called a srotapanna."
3The Thought of a Sakridagamin
"Subhuti! What do you think? Does a sakridagamin think, 'I have attained the fruit of a sakridagamin'?"
4There Is No Going and Coming
Subhuti said, "No, World-Honored One! Why is this? Because a sakridagamin is called one who goes and comes back once (一往來), yet in truth there is no going and coming; that is only his name."
5The Thought of an Anagamin
"Subhuti! What do you think? Does an anagamin think, 'I have attained the fruit of an anagamin'?"
6There Is No Not-Coming
Subhuti said, "No, World-Honored One! Why is this? Because an anagamin is called one who does not come back (不來), yet in truth there is no not-coming back; that is why he is called an anagamin."
7The Thought of an Arhat
"Subhuti! What do you think? Does an arhat think, 'I have attained the way of an arhat'?"
8Because There Is Nothing He Practices
Subhuti said, "No, World-Honored One! Why is this? Because in truth there is no dharma that can be named an arhat. World-Honored One! If an arhat thinks, 'I have attained the way of an arhat,' that is clinging to a self, a person, a being, and a life span.
World-Honored One! The Buddha has said that I am foremost among those who have attained the samadhi of no contention (無諍三昧), the first arhat free of desire. Yet I do not think, 'I am an arhat free of desire.'
World-Honored One! If I thought, 'I have attained the way of an arhat,' the World-Honored One would not say that Subhuti is one who delights in the aranya practice (阿蘭那行), the practice of stillness. Because Subhuti in truth practices nothing, it is said that Subhuti delights in the aranya practice."
