Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1What Was Attained with Dipamkara Buddha

The Buddha said to Subhuti, "What do you think? When the Tathagata was long ago with Dipamkara Buddha (燃燈佛), was there anything he attained in the Dharma?"

Interlinear notes 1

Perfecting this adornment makes the ground of the mind pure and bright.

2In Truth Nothing Was Attained

"No, World-Honored One! When the Tathagata was with Dipamkara Buddha, in truth there was nothing attained in the Dharma."

3Does a Bodhisattva Adorn a Buddha-Land?

"Subhuti! What do you think? Does a bodhisattva adorn a Buddha-land?"

4Adornment Is Only Its Name

"No, World-Honored One! Why is this? Because adorning a Buddha-land is not adornment; that is only its name."

5Give Rise to the Mind Without Dwelling Anywhere

"Therefore, Subhuti! All bodhisattva-mahasattvas should give rise to a pure and clear mind in this way: they should not give rise to a mind that dwells in form, nor give rise to a mind that dwells in sound, scent, taste, touch, or dharmas. They should give rise to that mind without dwelling anywhere."

6A Body as Great as Sumeru

"Subhuti! Suppose someone had a body as great as Sumeru, king of mountains. What do you think? Would that body be great?"

7Great Body Is Only Its Name

Subhuti said, "Very great, World-Honored One! Why is this? Because the Buddha has spoken of what is not a body; a great body is only its name."
