Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1The Sands of the Ganges

"Subhuti! Suppose that for every grain of sand in the Ganges (恆河) there were another Ganges. What do you think? Would the sands of all those Ganges rivers be many?"

Interlinear notes 1

Cultivating the merit of the unconditioned surpasses giving.

2The Rivers Alone Are Countless

Subhuti said, "Very many, World-Honored One! Those Ganges rivers alone would be countless — how much more their grains of sand."

3Giving in as Many Worlds as Those Sands

"Subhuti! I tell you now in truth: if a good man or a good woman gave away the seven treasures enough to fill as many great thousandfold world-systems as there are grains of sand in those Ganges rivers, would the merit gained be great?"

4Very Great, World-Honored One

Subhuti said, "Very great, World-Honored One!"

5A Four-Line Verse Is Greater

The Buddha said to Subhuti, "If a good man or a good woman took up and kept even a four-line verse from this sutra and explained it to others, that merit would surpass the merit before."
