Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1Subhuti Asks Again

Then Subhuti said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! When a good man or a good woman sets their mind on anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, where should they dwell, and how should they subdue their mind?"

Interlinear notes 1

In the end of becoming a Buddha there is, from the first, no mark of a self.

2There Is No Dharma That Sets the Mind

The Buddha said to Subhuti, "A good man or a good woman who sets their mind on anuttara-samyak-sambodhi should give rise to a mind like this: 'I shall deliver all beings. And when all beings have been delivered, in truth not one being has been delivered.' Why is this? Subhuti! Because if a bodhisattva has the mark of a self, the mark of a person, the mark of a being, or the mark of a life span, that one is not a bodhisattva. And how is that so? Subhuti! Because in truth there is no dharma that sets the mind on anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."

3Was There a Dharma Attained with Dipamkara Buddha?

"Subhuti! What do you think? When the Tathagata was with Dipamkara Buddha, was there a dharma by which he attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi?"

4There Was Not

"No, World-Honored One! As I understand the meaning of what the Buddha has said, when the Buddha was with Dipamkara Buddha there was no dharma by which he attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."

5And So He Gave the Prediction

The Buddha said, "So it is, so it is! Subhuti! In truth there is no dharma by which the Tathagata attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Subhuti! Had there been a dharma by which the Tathagata attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, Dipamkara Buddha would not have given me the prediction (授記), saying, 'In an age to come you shall become a Buddha, and your name shall be Shakyamuni.' It is because in truth there is no dharma by which anuttara-samyak-sambodhi is attained that Dipamkara Buddha gave me the prediction and said, 'In an age to come you shall become a Buddha, and your name shall be Shakyamuni.' Why is this? Because Tathagata means that all dharmas are suchness (如)."

6All Dharmas Are the Buddha-Dharma

"Though someone may say the Tathagata attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, Subhuti, in truth there is no dharma by which the Buddha attained anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Subhuti! In the anuttara-samyak-sambodhi the Tathagata attained there is neither reality nor hollowness. That is why the Tathagata says all dharmas are the Buddha-Dharma. Subhuti! What is called all dharmas is not all dharmas; that is why it is named all dharmas."

7The Parable of a Great Body

"Subhuti! It is like a person whose body is long and great."

8A Great Body Is Only Its Name

Subhuti said, "World-Honored One! The long and great body of a person the Tathagata speaks of is not a great body; a great body is only its name."

9To Say "I Deliver Beings" Is Not a Bodhisattva

"Subhuti! So it is with a bodhisattva. If he says, 'I shall deliver measureless beings,' he cannot be called a bodhisattva. Why is this? Subhuti! Because in truth there is no dharma that can be named a bodhisattva. That is why the Buddha says that in all dharmas there is no self, no person, no being, no life span."

10To Say "I Adorn a Buddha-Land" Is Not a Bodhisattva

"Subhuti! If a bodhisattva says, 'I shall adorn a Buddha-land,' he cannot be called a bodhisattva. Why is this? Because adorning a Buddha-land, as the Tathagata speaks of it, is not adornment; that is only its name."

11One Who Has Penetrated No-Self

"Subhuti! If a bodhisattva has penetrated the dharma of no-self (無我), the Tathagata calls that one a true bodhisattva."
