Jingang Jing (The Diamond Sutra) Complete in one volume "All marks that exist are empty and false" — a sutra that teaches one to give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere. It follows, just as they stand, the thirty-two sections into which Prince Zhaoming divided it. It is told that Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, heard one line of this sutra and set his heart on awakening.

1The Cause of the Seven Treasures

「須菩提!於意云何?若有人滿三千大千世界七寶,以用布施,是人以是因緣,得福多不?」

"Subhuti! What do you think? If someone gave away the seven treasures enough to fill the great thousandfold world-system, would the merit that person gains by this cause be great?"

Interlinear notes 1

法身遍界,通化無邊

The Dharma body fills every realm, and its transforming reach has no bound.

2The Merit Is Very Great

「如是,世尊!此人以是因緣,得福甚多。」

"Yes, World-Honored One! The merit that person gains by this cause is very great."

3Because Merit Is Not, It Is Called Great

「須菩提!若福德有實,如來不說得福德多;以福德無故,如來說得福德多。」

"Subhuti! If merit were something real, the Tathagata would not say the merit gained is great. It is because merit is not a thing that the Tathagata says the merit gained is great."
