Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 5 — The Geunpok Collection A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

As for the drilling of troops in Gyeonggi, we have charged them in every way of late, and the able-bodied men picked out come to nearly nine thousand. Yet the weapons are bare and the food and goods are not provided, so that a plan for bringing forth grain must be sought out with haste.

The two places Jingang (鎭江) and Hogot (壺串) have already become garrison farm ground of the Military Training Directorate, but the land is wide and the strength of men has not reached it, so it has not been broken up throughout. If a hundred odd farm oxen could be had, and the grain yielded by last year's garrison farms brought out besides and shared among those who ask of themselves to work on shares (幷作), and they were allowed to go in and farm there, then the fallow ground could be broken by degrees and what is got would be great besides.

May the oxen of the Resettlement Directorate, scattered among the several counties of Hwanghae, be brought in good season and shared out?
