Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 5 — The Geunpok Collection A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

Looking in prostration at the dispatch of Yi Si-bal (李時發), the inspector of Chungcheong, it says that robbers have gathered at Hongsan (鴻山), which is greatly alarming. It may be that this has been passed on beyond the truth of it. Only, of late the upheavals have not ceased and the people's hearts are easily shaken, and from of old those who band and gather have always risen at such a time, so the quieting and ordering of it cannot be neglected as a small thing.

The sending out of left and right defense commanders in Gyeonggi at the first was meant to have them answer along two roads apart. The right defense commander O Eung-jeong (吳應鼎) has been set, on the pretext of drilling troops, to go out tomorrow and make a round of Suwon, Juksan and those parts and look into how matters stand along the straight road. The left defense commander Byeon Yang-jun (邊良俊) has as yet no term fixed for coming up, so that from Yeoju downward, at Yongjin and those parts, there is no man to keep a hold on the watching and holding, and it seems left loose.

The former defense commander Byeon Eung-seong (邊應星) was replaced on the ground that he and the Circuit Commissioner Song Eon-sin (宋言愼) stand in a relation that must be avoided, but that is not the same as the case of men holding one and the same charge, and he is at Gwangju (廣州) at present. May Byeon Eung-seong be kept as he is and set to go forward at once to Pasa (婆娑), Yongjin and those parts and be stationed there to look to the watch?
