On the ninth day of the seventh month your servant respectfully received at Jeongju (定州) the royal directive bearing the seal of the deputy royal secretary (同副承旨).
As for provisions for entertaining the Ming troops, at Uiju (義州), Yangchaek (良策), Charyeon (車輦) and Imban (林畔) a day's food for five thousand men has been provided at each, and temporary shelters, cauldrons, firewood, fodder and the like have in the main already been made ready. At Jeongju there are fifty sacks of white rice, fifty sacks of coarse-hulled rice and five hundred and thirty-six sacks of upland rice, which the aide-de-camp Hong Jongrok (洪宗祿), joining his strength with that of the deputy magistrate Yun Seunggil (尹承吉) at Guseong (龜城), provided and has likewise already brought in. This is six days' provisions for five thousand soldiers.
The storehouse grain of Gasan district (嘉山郡) has been scattered and is nearly all gone, so the army grain there may be carried over from what is at Jeongju. But of fodder beans the number in that district is barely a thousand odd sacks, so there is fear of falling short; and how much grain there is at Anju (安州) your servant does not yet know, no report having come, which troubles him the more. As your servant sees it, cloudy days have followed one another of late and the streams and ditches everywhere are overflowing. If it does not clear soon and a great body of horse and foot stays long in one place, there is no way of keeping up the slender provisions, and he is sorely vexed. As for carrying the grain of the three districts to Anju, he has sent royal messengers and military officers one after another to press it on, but whether it has now arrived he does not know.
As to the matter of boats on the two rivers, reports have each already come in: that Jang Useong (張祐成), garrison commander of Seonsapo, has in the main gathered public and private boats at the Daejeong River (大定江) and is now making a boat bridge; and that Min Gyejung (閔繼中), garrison commander of Nogang, has likewise made a boat bridge over the Cheongcheon River (晴川江) with some fifty public and private boats.
Your servant's mean illness has not mended in the least, and he has barely reached Jeongju; he has no choice but to stay a day or two and wait for it to mend, and then plans to go forward to Gasan, Anju and those parts and look over every matter.
