Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 14 — The Record of Jinsa A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

Weighing today's case over again: though a hundred strong positions were set up elsewhere, if Yeongnam cannot hold out, then there is no part of Gangwon, Hoseo, or Honam that would not in turn be ground to suffer the ravages of war, and the great business would be lost.

In general what the enemy fears is the Ming army. Now let the troops of Regional Commander Liu (劉摠兵) be moved forward to stay within the bounds of Daegu and Cheongdo, looking to left and right and screening against a thrust inward by way of Gyeongju and the middle road; let the troops of Assistant Commander Luo (駱參將) and the others be moved forward to camp within the bounds of Goseong and Sacheon, to block the road by which the enemy would invade westward; and let the navies of the three provinces be joined to them, so that water and land combine their strength and make their noise and show of force great.

And if the grain of Honam were shipped by sea from Suncheon to serve as army provision, it could arrive in a day with a fair wind, and the ills of hauling it overland would be spared. Then let our own troops take post at Jeongjin (鼎津), set up works there and hold it firmly so that the enemy's boats cannot cross; and if the three places stretch out in a line and fight and hold, the enemy's strength will shrink of itself and they will not dare come butting at us as they please.
