On Copying the Records of the Army Command
In the eulmi year I, as Chief Minister, received command and held at the same time the charge of Supreme Commissioner for the provinces of Gyeonggi, Hwanghae, Pyeongan and Hamgyeong; and in the spring of the musul year I resigned and was replaced, whereupon that office too was abolished. All the drafts of the writings I had submitted and the dispatches that passed to and fro I had Bang Su (方秀), a clerk of the office, copy out for me, and I gave it the name Gunmun deungnok, the Register of the Army Command. What was scattered and could not be gathered is two parts in three besides.
I, a dull and worthless man, met a time when the business of the state was hard and perilous and held a charge that joined the inner and the outer; yet I was of help in not one matter, and left my post for nothing and brought shame on the grace of my sage lord in knowing me. Now, looking at this record, I am dazed and ashamed before myself. And so I write these few words at the head of the book, that those who see it may know my guilt.
