Jewang Ungi (Rhymed Chronicle of Emperors and Kings) Lower Book From Pangu to the Jurchen Jin, from Dangun to Goryeo — an epic that weaves the two histories, of China and of the East, into verse. Declaring that there is a world apart in Liaodong, it sets the history of Korea beside that of China, and it is one of the first histories to sing of Dangun as the founding ancestor of every state on the Korean peninsula. The author's own one hundred and ninety-seven interlinear notes are carried with it.

1A bird covers him and a tiger gives him suck

加恩縣人阿慈介, 生得一兒業農圃, 置向田頭夫婦耘, 鳥來舒覆虎來乳.

Ajagae, a man of the district of Gaeun, begot a son, and his work was the field and the garden. They laid the child at the head of the field, and while husband and wife were weeding, a bird came and spread its wings over him and a tiger came and gave him suck.

2His gifts stood out from the crowd

旣壯仕羅詣行間, 才力離倫性雄虎.

When he was grown he served Silla and went out to the camps, and his gifts and his strength stood out from the crowd, and his nature was bold and martial.

3Gyeon Hwon of the Yi

姓本是李名甄萱, 承命出向南方戍.

His surname was Yi at the first, and his name was Gyeon Hwon. He took his orders and went out to the garrison of the southern country.

4He raises his banner at Mujinseong

潛含大志伺時便, 啗士誘民常吐哺, 唐佋景福元壬子, 據虎珍城 初樹羽.

Quietly he held a great purpose and watched for a convenient time, feeding the gentry and coaxing the people, ever leaving his meal unfinished to receive them. In the first year of Jingfu under Emperor Zhaozong of Tang, the year imja, he held Mujinseong (Gwangju) and first raised his feathered banner.

5His son Singeom shuts up his father

兵强氣銳恣橫行, 名後百濟四十五, 有子不良將奈何, 其名神劍乃幽父.

His troops were strong and his spirit was keen, and he ranged about as he pleased, and the name of Later Baekje lasted forty-five years. He had a son who was not good, and what was to be done? That son, Singeom by name, shut up his own father.

6He leaves Geumsansa and comes to our Taejo

金山佛殿戶誰開, 泰華千里當寸步, 淸泰三年丙申春, 偸渡碧江歸 我祖.

Who was it that opened the door of the buddha hall at Geumsansa? He counted a thousand li of Taishan and Huashan as a single short step, and in the spring of the third year of Qingtai, the year byeongsin, he stole across the blue river and came over to our Taejo.

7He is comforted with the rites due a king

對以王禮慰於朝, 往討賊子尸諸路.

He was met with the rites due a king and was comforted at court, and they went and struck the rebel son and laid out the dead along the roads.

8He dies vomiting blood

臨薨歐血那可追, 美矣羅王知去就.

At his death he vomited blood, and how was it to be called back? Beautiful it is that the king of Silla knew when to go and when to stay.
