The fire god and the death of Izanami迦具土神

Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) 古事記 · Ō no Yasumaro · 712 (Japan, 5th year of Wadō) · 3 passages · 565 Chinese characters · reading time 2.3 min

Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) Upper Book The oldest surviving book in Japan. Three volumes, beginning with the opening of heaven and earth, passing through the age of the gods, and closing with Empress Suiko. One hundred and five songs are written in man'yōgana, so a whole text survives in which the Chinese characters carry sound alone and not meaning. It sets down the same events differently from the Nihon Shoki at many points, and is well worth reading beside it.

1Izanagi weeps and buries Izanami

Then Izanagi no Mikoto said, "My beloved sister! Have I traded you for a single child!"

As he crept to the place of her pillow and crept to the place of her feet and wept, a god came into being from his tears. She dwells at the foot of the tree at Uneo (畝尾) on Kaguyama (香山), and her name is Nakisawame no Kami (泣澤女神).

And Izanami no Kami, who had departed as a god, was buried on Mount Hiba (比婆之山), on the border of the land of Izumo (出雲國) and the land of Hahaki (伯伎國).
