Emperor Kannunakawamimi (神渟名川耳天皇) was the third son of Emperor Kan'yamatoiwarebiko. His mother was called Himetatara□isuzuhime no Mikoto. She was the eldest daughter of Kotoshironushi no Kami.
The emperor's bearing was tall and lofty, and in his youth he had a bold spirit. When he grew up his form was large and strong, his skill in arms was greater than other men's, and his will was calm and firm.
When he reached forty-eight, Emperor Kan'yamatoiwarebiko died. At that time Kannunakawamimi no Mikoto was pure and deep in his duty to his father. His grief and his reverence did not cease, and he gave his mind above all to the matter of the burial.
His elder half-brother Tagishimimi no Mikoto was already advanced in years and had long taken part in the affairs of the court. Therefore the emperor entrusted matters to him as well and kept him close. But that prince was □ in the setting of his conduct, and from the first he went against benevolence and right. At last, in the time of mourning, he used authority and favor as he pleased. He hid a harmful heart within and plotted to kill his two younger brothers.
At this time the year sign was gimyo.
2The elder brother trembles and cannot shoot, so the bow is snatched from him
In winter, in the eleventh month, Kannunakawamimi no Mikoto, together with his elder brother Kamuyaimimi no Mikoto, secretly learned of that purpose and guarded well against it.
When the work at the imperial tomb was finished, he had Yugebe no Wakahiko (弓部稚彦) make a bow, and Yamato no Kanuchibe Amatsumaura (倭鍛部天津眞浦) make the ma□ arrowheads, and the Yahagibe (矢部) make the arrows.
When the bow and the arrows were ready, Kannunakawamimi no Mikoto wished to shoot Tagishimimi no Mikoto dead. It happened that Tagishimimi no Mikoto was lying alone on a great couch in the Omuro at Kataoka.
Then Nunakawamimi no Mikoto said to Kamuyaimimi no Mikoto, "Now is the very time. Words are to be kept secret, and a deed must be done with care. Therefore no one at all has shared in my hidden plan. Today's work is for me and for you alone to do. I will open the door first. You shoot him."
So they went in, one following the other. Kannunakawamimi no Mikoto flung the door open, but Kamuyaimimi no Mikoto shook in his hands and his feet and could not loose the arrow.
Then Kannunakawamimi no Mikoto snatched away the bow and the arrows his elder brother held and shot Tagishimimi no Mikoto. The first shot struck his breast, the second shot struck his back, and so he killed him.
At this Kamuyaimimi no Mikoto was ashamed and gave way of himself. He yielded to Kannunakawamimi no Mikoto and said, "I am the elder brother, yet I was weak and could not carry the thing through. Now you alone have raised up a divine valor and have cut down the chief evil yourself. It is fitting. Let you come in brightness to the seat of heaven and take up the work of the imperial ancestors. I will help you and will serve at the offerings to the gods of heaven and earth."
