Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan) Hitoyo — The Age of Humans The oldest official history of Japan. Thirty volumes, from the age of the gods down to Empress Jitō. The two books of the age of the gods set the differing versions of one myth side by side, each opened with “one account has it thus”, so that the stories that disagree are not hidden away. Accounts touching Baekje, Silla, Goguryeo and Imna stand at 1,379 places, which makes it also the book with the most to set beside the Korean histories.

1Emperor Koan

日本足彦國押人天皇。觀松彦香殖稻天皇第二子也。母曰世襲足媛。尾張連遠祖瀛津世襲之妹也。

Emperor Yamatotarashihikokunioshihito (日本足彦國押人天皇) was the second son of Emperor Mimatsuhikokaeshine. His mother was called Yosotarashihime. She was the sister of Okitsuyoso (瀛津世襲), the distant ancestor of the Owari no Muraji.

2He is made crown prince

天皇以觀松彦香殖稻天皇六十八年春正月。立爲皇太子。

The emperor was set up as crown prince in the sixty-eighth year of Emperor Mimatsuhikokaeshine, in spring, the first month.

3The former sovereign dies

八十三年秋八月。觀松彦香殖稻天皇崩。

In the eighty-third year, in autumn, the eighth month, Emperor Mimatsuhikokaeshine died.

4He ascends the throne

元年春正月乙酉朔辛卯。皇太子即天皇位。

In the first year, in spring, the first month, the first day being an eulyu day, on the sinmyo day, the crown prince ascended the throne.

5She is honored as empress dowager

秋八月辛巳朔。尊皇后曰皇太后。是年也太歳己丑。

In autumn, the eighth month, on the first day, a sinsa day, he honored the empress and called her the empress dowager. In this year the year sign was gichuk.

6He moves to Akitsushimanomiya

二年冬十月。遷都於室地。是謂秋津嶋宮。

In the second year, in winter, the tenth month, he moved the capital to the land of Muro. This is called Akitsushimanomiya (秋津嶋宮).

7He makes his niece empress

廿六年春二月己丑朔壬寅。立姪押媛爲皇后。后生大日本根子彦太瓊天皇。

In the twenty-sixth year, in spring, the second month, the first day being a gichuk day, on the imin day, his niece Oshihime was set up as empress. The empress bore Emperor Oyamatonekohikofutoni.

一云。磯城縣主葉江女長媛。一云。十市縣主五十坂彦女五十坂媛也。

One account says she was Nagahime (長媛), the daughter of Hae, the Shiki no Agatanushi. Another account says she was Isakahime (五十坂媛), the daughter of Isakahiko, the Tochi no Agatanushi.

8The former sovereign is buried

卅八年秋八月丙子朔己丑。葬觀松彦香殖稻天皇于掖上博多山上陵。

In the thirty-eighth year, in autumn, the eighth month, the first day being a byeongja day, on the gichuk day, Emperor Mimatsuhikokaeshine was buried in the tomb on Mount Hakata at Wakigami.

9A crown prince is set up

七十六年春正月己巳朔癸酉。立大日本根子彦太瓊尊爲皇太子。年廿六。

In the seventy-sixth year, in spring, the first month, the first day being a gisa day, on the gyeyu day, Oyamatonekohikofutoni no Mikoto was set up as crown prince. He was twenty-six years old.

10He dies

百二年春正月戊戌朔丙午。天皇崩。

In the one hundred and second year, in spring, the first month, the first day being a musul day, on the byeongo day, the emperor died.
