Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Ilseong Isageum ascends the throne

逸聖尼師今立,儒理王之長子。妃朴氏,支所禮王之女。

Ilseong Isageum ascended the throne. He was the eldest son of King Yuri, and his queen was of the house of Bak, the daughter of King Jisorye.

2First year — a great amnesty

元年九月,大赦。

In the first year, in the ninth month, a great amnesty was granted.

3Second year — he sacrifices at the shrine of the founder

二年春正月,親祀始祖廟。

In the second year, in spring, the first month, he sacrificed in person at the shrine of the founder.

4Third year — Ungseon is given charge of military affairs

三年春正月,拜雄宣爲伊飡,兼知內外兵馬事;近宗爲一吉飡。

In the third year, in spring, the first month, Ungseon was appointed to the rank of ichan and given charge as well of military affairs within and without, and Geunjong was made ilgilchan.

5Fourth year — the Malgal burn the palisades

四年春二月,靺鞨入塞,燒長嶺五柵。

In the fourth year, in spring, the second month, the Malgal came in across the border and burned the five palisades at Jangnyeong.

6Fifth year — a hall of government, and a sacrifice at Taebaeksan

五年春二月,置政事堂於金城。秋七月,大閱閼川西。冬十月,北巡,親祀太白山。

In the fifth year, in spring, the second month, a hall of government (政事堂) was set up at Geumseong. In autumn, the seventh month, there was a great review west of Alcheon. In winter, the tenth month, the king went round the north and sacrificed in person at Taebaeksan.

7Sixth year — the Malgal fall upon Jangnyeong

六年秋七月,隕霜殺菽。八月,靺鞨襲長嶺,虜掠民口。冬十月,又來,雪甚,乃退。

In the sixth year, in autumn, the seventh month, frost fell and killed the beans. In the eighth month the Malgal fell upon Jangnyeong and carried off the people. In winter, the tenth month, they came again, but the snow was heavy, and so they withdrew.

8Seventh year — a palisade is set up at Jangnyeong

七年春二月,立柵長嶺,以防靺鞨。

In the seventh year, in spring, the second month, a palisade was set up at Jangnyeong to hold off the Malgal.

9Eighth year — an eclipse of the sun

八年秋九月辛亥晦,日有食之。

In the eighth year, in autumn, the ninth month, on the last day sinhae, the sun was eclipsed.

10Ninth year — the strike on the Malgal is dropped

九年秋七月,召羣公議征靺鞨。伊飡雄宣上言不可,乃止。

In the ninth year, in autumn, the seventh month, the king called the high officials together to discuss striking the Malgal. The ichan Ungseon said that it should not be done, and so it was dropped.

11Tenth year — the palace buildings are repaired

十年春二月,修葺宮室。夏六月乙丑,熒惑犯鎭星。冬十一月,雷。

In the tenth year, in spring, the second month, the palace buildings were repaired. In summer, the sixth month, on the day eulchuk, Yinghuo (熒惑) trespassed on Zhenxing (鎭星). In winter, the eleventh month, there was thunder.

12Eleventh year — farming is the root of government

十一年春二月,下令:「農者政本,食惟民天。諸州郡修完堤坊,廣闢田野。」又下令禁民間用金銀珠玉。

In the eleventh year, in spring, the second month, an order went out: "Farming is the root of government, and food is the people's heaven. Let every province and commandery repair and make good the embankments, and open up field and paddy widely." Another order forbade the people to use gold, silver, pearls, or jade.

13Twelfth year — grain is moved and given out

十二年,春夏旱,南地最甚。民飢,移其粟賑給之。

In the twelfth year there was drought in spring and summer, worst in the southern land. The people went hungry, so their grain was moved and given out to them.

14Thirteenth year — Apdok revolts

十三年冬十月,押督叛,發兵討平之,徙其餘衆於南地。

In the thirteenth year, in winter, the tenth month, Apdok revolted. Troops were sent out and put it down, and those who were left were moved to the southern land.

15Fourteenth year — men fit to be generals are put forward

十四年秋七月,命臣寮各擧智勇堪爲將帥者。

In the fourteenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, the officials were ordered each to put forward men of wisdom and courage fit to be generals.

16Fifteenth year — Bak Ado is invested as Galmunwang

十五年,封朴阿道爲葛文王。

In the fifteenth year, Bak Ado was invested as Galmunwang.

新羅追封王,皆稱葛文王,其義未詳。

In Silla, kings invested after their death are all called Galmunwang. The meaning of this is not clear.

17Sixteenth year — a comet and pestilence

十六年春正月,以得訓爲沙飡,宣忠爲奈麻秋。八月,有星孛于天市。冬十一月,雷。京都大疫。

In the sixteenth year, in spring, the first month, Deukhun was made sachan and Seonchung nama. In autumn, the eighth month, a comet appeared in Tianshi (天市). In winter, the eleventh month, there was thunder. A great pestilence went about the capital.

18Seventeenth year — drought

十七年,自夏四月不雨,至秋七月乃雨。

In the seventeenth year no rain fell from summer, the fourth month, until at last it rained in autumn, the seventh month.

19Eighteenth year — Ungseon dies

十八年春二月,伊飡雄宣卒,以大宣爲伊飡,兼知內外兵馬事。三月,雨雹。

In the eighteenth year, in spring, the second month, the ichan Ungseon died, so Daeseon was made ichan and given charge as well of military affairs within and without. In the third month hail fell.

20Twentieth year — fire at the palace gate

二十年冬十月,宮門災。彗星見東方,又見東北方。

In the twentieth year, in winter, the tenth month, fire broke out at the palace gate. A comet appeared in the east, and appeared again in the northeast.

21Twenty-first year — the king dies

二十一年春二月,王薨。

In the twenty-first year, in spring, the second month, the king died.
