Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Adalla Isageum ascends the throne

阿達羅尼師今立,逸聖長子也。身長七尺,豐準有奇相。母,朴氏,支所禮王之女;妃,朴氏內禮夫人。祗摩王之女也。

Adalla Isageum ascended the throne. He was the eldest son of Ilseong. He was seven cheok tall, with a high nose and an uncommon look. His mother was of the house of Bak, the daughter of King Jisorye, and his queen was Lady Naerye of the house of Bak, the daughter of King Jima.

2First year — Gyewon is entrusted with the government

元年,三月,以繼元爲伊飡,委軍國政事。

6Fifth year — Jungnyeong is opened and the Wa come

In the seventh year, in summer, the fourth month, there was a downpour. The waters of Alcheon overflowed and swept away the houses of the people, and the north gate of Geumseong fell of itself.

8Eighth year — locusts and fish

八年,秋七月,蝗害穀。海魚多出死。

In the eighth year, in autumn, the seventh month, locusts harmed the grain. Many sea fish came out and died.

9Ninth year — he goes to Sadoseong

九年,巡幸沙道城,勞戍卒。

In the ninth year the king went to Sadoseong and comforted the soldiers on guard.

10Eleventh year — a dragon appears

十一年,春二月,龍見京都。

In the eleventh year, in spring, the second month, a dragon appeared in the capital.

11Twelfth year — Gilseon flees to Baekje

十二年,冬十月,阿飡吉宣謀叛,發覺,懼誅亡入百濟。王移書求之,百濟不許,王怒出師伐之。百濟嬰城守不出,我軍粮盡乃歸。

In the twelfth year, in winter, the tenth month, Gilseon, of the rank of achan, plotted a revolt. When it came to light he feared death and fled to Baekje. The king sent a letter asking for him back, but Baekje would not allow it. The king was angry and sent out troops to strike them. Baekje held fast behind its walls and would not come out, and the Silla army ran out of provisions and so went back.

12Thirteenth year — an eclipse of the sun

十三年,春正月辛亥朔,日有食之。

In the thirteenth year, in spring, the first month, on the first day sinhae, the sun was eclipsed.

13Fourteenth year — Baekje begs for peace

十四年,秋七月,百濟襲破國西二城,虜獲民口一千而去。八月,命一吉飡興宣,領兵二萬伐之,王又率騎八千,自漢水臨之,百濟大懼,還其所掠男女,乞和。

In the fourteenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, Baekje fell upon two forts in the west of the country, broke them, and carried off a thousand of the people. In the eighth month the ilgilchan Heungseon was ordered to lead twenty thousand troops and strike them, and the king himself led eight thousand horsemen and came upon them from the Hansu (漢水). Baekje was greatly afraid. It sent back the men and women it had carried off and begged for peace.

14Fifteenth year — Gyewon dies

十五年,夏四月,伊飡繼元卒,以興宣爲伊飡。

In the fifteenth year, in summer, the fourth month, the ichan Gyewon died, so Heungseon was made ichan.

15Seventeenth year — Baekje plunders the border

十七年,春二月,重修始祖廟。秋七月,京師地震,霜雹害穀。冬十月,百濟寇邊。

In the seventeenth year, in spring, the second month, the shrine of the founder was built anew. In autumn, the seventh month, the earth shook in the capital, and frost and hail harmed the grain. In winter, the tenth month, Baekje plundered the border.

十八年春,穀貴,民飢。

In the eighteenth year, in spring, grain was dear and the people went hungry.

17Nineteenth year — a great pestilence

十九年,春正月,以仇道爲波珍飡,仇須兮爲一吉飡。二月,有事始祖廟。京都大疫。

In the nineteenth year, in spring, the first month, Gudo was made pajinchan and Gusuhye ilgilchan. In the second month there was a sacrifice at the shrine of the founder. A great pestilence went about the capital.

18Twentieth year — Himiko, queen of Wa, sends an envoy

二十年,夏五月,倭女王卑彌乎遣使來聘。

In the twentieth year, in summer, the fifth month, Himiko (卑彌乎), queen of Wa (倭), sent an envoy to pay respects.

19Twenty-first year — a rain of earth and drought

二十一年,春正月,雨王土。二月,旱。井泉竭。

In the twenty-first year, in spring, the first month, a rain of earth fell. In the second month there was drought, and the wells and springs ran dry.

20Thirty-first year — the king dies

三十一年,春三月,王薨。

In the thirty-first year, in spring, the third month, the king died.
