King Jungcheon中川王

King Jungcheon's name was Yeonbul (然弗), and he was the son of King Dongcheon. His bearing and his looks were handsome and open, and he had wisdom and craft. In the seventeenth year of Dongcheon he was set up as crown prince, and in the twenty-second year, in autumn, the ninth month, the king died and the crown prince ascended the throne.

In winter, the tenth month, Lady Yeon was set up as queen. In the eleventh month the king's younger brothers Yemul and Sagu and the rest plotted a revolt and were put to the sword.

In the third year, in spring, the second month, the king commanded Myeongnim Eosu the minister to take charge of the affairs of the soldiers and horses within and without as well.

In the fourth year, in summer, the fourth month, the king put Lady Gwanna into a leather sack and threw her into the western sea.

Lady Gwanna was fair and lovely of face, and her hair was nine cheok long. The king loved her and was about to set her up as lesser queen. Queen Yeon feared that she would have his love to herself, and so she said to the king. "I hear that Western Wei seeks long hair and buys it with a thousand pieces of gold. Long ago our former king did not give China its due courtesy, and he suffered their soldiers and fled, and he all but lost the altars of the state. If the king now follows what they wish and sends a single envoy to offer this beauty with the long hair, they will surely receive her gladly, and there will be no more raiding and striking."

The king knew what she meant and kept silent and did not answer. The lady heard of it and feared that harm would come to her, and she slandered the queen to the king instead. "The queen scolds me always and says, 'How does a girl from a country house come to be here? If you do not go back of your own will, you will surely be sorry for it later.' I think the queen is watching for a time when the great king goes out, so that she may harm me. What am I to do?"

Later, when the king was coming back from hunting at Gigu, the lady took a leather sack and met him and wept and said. "The queen was going to put me in this and throw me into the sea. If the great king is good enough to grant me my poor life and let me go back to my house, how would I dare hope to serve at your side again?"

The king asked and learned of her deceit, and he was angry and said to the lady. "Do you wish to go into the sea?" He had men throw her in.

In the seventh year, in summer, the fourth month, Myeongnim Eosu the guksang died, and Eumu of Biryu, of the rank of paeja, was made guksang. In autumn, the seventh month, the earth shook.

In the eighth year the king's son Yangno was set up as crown prince, and those within the country were pardoned.

In the ninth year, in winter, the eleventh month, Myeongnim Holdo of Yeonna married the princess and was made bumadowi, the office of the king's son-in-law. In the twelfth month no snow fell. There was a great plague.

In the twelfth year, in winter, the twelfth month, the king hunted in the valley of Dunul. Yuchi Kai, a general of Wei, led soldiers and came to attack. The king picked five thousand of his best horse and fought in the valley of Yangmaek and broke them, and eight thousand heads and more were taken.

In the thirteenth year, in autumn, the ninth month, the king went to Jolbon and sacrificed at the shrine of the founder.

In the fifteenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, the king hunted at Gigu and took a white roe deer. In winter, the eleventh month, there was thunder, and the earth shook.

In the twenty-third year, in winter, the tenth month, the king died. He was buried on the Jungcheonwon plain and was called King Jungcheon (中川王).
