King Seocheon西川王

King Seocheon's name was Yangno (藥盧), and he was the second son of King Jungcheon. He was clear of mind and quick to understand, and he was kind, and the people of the country loved him and revered him. In the eighth year of King Jungcheon he was set up as crown prince, and in the twenty-third year, in winter, the tenth month, the king died and the crown prince ascended the throne.

In the second year, in spring, the first month, the daughter of Usu, the daesaja of the western division, was set up as queen. In autumn, the seventh month, Eumu the guksang died. In the ninth month Sangnu was made guksang, and Sangnu was the son of Eumu. In winter, the twelfth month, the earth shook.

In the third year, in summer, the fourth month, frost fell and harmed the barley. In the sixth month there was a great drought.

In the fourth year, in autumn, the seventh month, on the first day jeongyu, the sun was eclipsed. The people were hungry, and the granaries were opened to relieve them.

In the seventh year, in summer, the fourth month, the king went to Sinseong and hunted and took a white deer. In autumn, the eighth month, the king came back from Sinseong. In the ninth month holy sparrows gathered in the courtyard of the palace.

In the eleventh year, in winter, the tenth month, Suksin came raiding and cut down and harmed the people of the border. The king said to his officers. "I have taken up the foundation of the country wrongly with this slight and trifling body. My virtue has not been able to bring peace and my majesty has not been able to shake them, and so I have let this enemy next door trouble our land. I wish to find a crafty officer and a fierce general to break this thrust from afar. You, my lords, put forward each of you a man of rare plan and uncommon craft who is fit to be a commander."

The officers all said. "The king's younger brother Dalga is brave and has wisdom and craft, and he is fit to be the great general."

The king then sent Dalga to go and strike them. Dalga brought out a rare plan and fell upon them unawares, and he took Dallo fortress and killed their chief, and he moved six hundred households and more to Ocheon south of Buyeo, and he brought six or seven villages to surrender and made them vassals. The king was greatly pleased, and he raised Dalga to be Lord Anguk and gave him charge of the affairs of the soldiers and horses within and without, and he had him command the villages of Yangmaek and Suksin as well.

In the seventeenth year, in spring, the second month, the king's younger brothers Iru and Sobal, two men, plotted a revolt. They falsely gave out that they were ill and went to the hot springs, and there they played and made merry with their followers without restraint, and their words were unruly and against the king. The king called them and falsely promised to make them ministers, and when they came he had strong men seize them and put them to the sword.

In the nineteenth year, in summer, the fourth month, the king went to Sinseong. The prefect of Haegok offered the eye of a whale, and it gave light at night. In autumn, the eighth month, the king hunted in the east and took a white deer. In the ninth month the earth shook. In winter, the eleventh month, the king came back from Sinseong.

In the twenty-third year the king died. He was buried on the Seocheonwon plain and was called King Seocheon (西川王).
