Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Goguryeo The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Sosurim ascends the throne

小獸林王,諱丘夫諱丘夫,故國原王之子也。身長大有雄略。故國原王二十五年,立為太子。四十一年,王薨,太子卽位。

King Sosurim's name was Gubu (丘夫), and he was the son of King Gogugwon. He was tall and big of body, and he had bold plans in him. In the twenty-fifth year of King Gogugwon he was set up as crown prince. In the forty-first year the king died, and the crown prince ascended the throne.

2The second year — the law of the Buddha comes in, and the Great Academy is set up

In the second year, in summer, the sixth month, Fu Jian, the king of Qin, sent an envoy and the monk Sundo, and sent an image of the Buddha and the texts of the sutras. The king sent an envoy to give thanks in return, and offered the products of the land. He set up the Great Academy and taught the young men of the country.

3The third year — the code of law is first proclaimed

三年,始頒律令。

5The fifth year — the beginning of the law of the Buddha in Haedong

五年,春二月,始創省門寺,以置順道;又創伊弗蘭寺,以置阿道。此海東佛法之始。秋七月,攻百濟水谷城。

In the fifth year, in spring, the second month, the temple of Seongmun was first built, and Sundo was placed there. The temple of Ibullan was also built, and Ado was placed there. This was the beginning of the law of the Buddha in Haedong. In autumn, the seventh month, he attacked the fortress of Sugok in Baekje.

7The seventh year — Baekje raids the fortress of Pyeongyang

七年,冬十月,無雪,雷,民疫。百濟將兵三萬,來侵平壤城。十一月,南伐百濟。遣使入苻秦朝貢。

In the seventh year, in winter, the tenth month, no snow fell, it thundered, and the people fell ill. Baekje led thirty thousand soldiers and came to raid the fortress of Pyeongyang. In the eleventh month he went south and attacked Baekje. He sent an envoy into the Qin of the Fu family and offered tribute.

8The eighth year — the Khitan break into the northern border

八年,旱,民饑相食。秋九月,契丹犯北邊,陷八部落。

In the eighth year there was a drought, and the people starved and ate one another. In autumn, the ninth month, the Khitan broke into the northern border and took eight villages.

9The thirteenth year — a comet appears in the northwest

十三年,秋九月,星孛于西北。

In the thirteenth year, in autumn, the ninth month, a comet appeared in the northwest.

10The fourteenth year — King Sosurim dies

十四年,冬十一月,王薨。葬於小獸林,號為小獸林王。

In the fourteenth year, in winter, the eleventh month, the king died. He was buried at Sosurim, and was called King Sosurim (小獸林王).
