Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Goguryeo The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Gogugyang ascends the throne

故國壤王,諱伊連,小獸林王之弟也。小獸林王在位十四年,薨,無嗣,弟伊連卽位。

King Gogugyang's name was Iryeon (伊連), and he was the younger brother of King Sosurim. King Sosurim was on the throne fourteen years and died, and he had no heir, so his younger brother Iryeon ascended the throne.

2The second year — Liaodong and Hyeondo fall

二年,夏六月,王出兵四萬,襲遼東。先是,燕王垂命帶方王佐,鎭龍城。佐聞我軍襲遼東,遣司馬郝景,將兵救之,我軍擊敗之,遂陷遼東、玄菟,虜男女一萬口而還。冬十月,燕慕容農將兵來侵,復遼東、玄菟二郡。初,幽、冀流民,多來投,農以范陽龐淵,為遼東太守,招撫之。十二月,地震。

In the second year, in summer, the sixth month, the king sent out forty thousand soldiers and attacked Liaodong. Before this, Murong Chui, the king of Yan, had ordered Murong Zuo, the king of Daebang, to hold Longcheng. Zuo heard that the Goguryeo army was attacking Liaodong, and sent Hao Jing, the marshal, to lead soldiers and save it. The Goguryeo army struck them and broke them, and then took Liaodong and Hyeondo, and came back with ten thousand men and women taken captive.

In winter, the tenth month, Murong Nong of Yan led soldiers and came to raid, and took back the two commanderies of Liaodong and Hyeondo. In the beginning many of the wandering people of Youzhou and Jizhou had come and given themselves up, so Nong made Pang Yuan of Fanyang the prefect of Liaodong, to call them in and soothe them.

In the twelfth month the earth shook.

3The third year — Damdeok is made crown prince

三年,春正月,立王子談德為太子。秋八月,王發兵,南伐百濟。冬十月,桃李華。牛生馬,八足二尾。

In the third year, in spring, the first month, he set up his son Damdeok as crown prince. In autumn, the eighth month, the king sent out soldiers and went south and attacked Baekje. In winter, the tenth month, the peach and the plum flowered. A cow bore a horse with eight legs and two tails.

4The fifth year — a great drought, and locusts

五年,夏四月,大旱。秋八月,蝗。

In the fifth year, in summer, the fourth month, there was a great drought. In autumn, the eighth month, locusts came.

5The sixth year — Baekje plunders the southern border

六年,春,饑人相食,王發倉賑給。秋九月,百濟來侵,掠南鄙部落而歸。

In the sixth year, in spring, there was hunger and people ate one another, so the king opened the storehouses and gave out relief. In autumn, the ninth month, Baekje came to raid, plundered the villages of the southern border, and went back.

6The seventh year — Baekje breaks the fortress of Doap

七年,秋九月,百濟遣達率眞嘉謨,攻破都押城,虜二百人以歸。

In the seventh year, in autumn, the ninth month, Baekje sent Jin Gamo, who held the rank of dalsol, and he attacked and broke the fortress of Doap, and went back with two hundred people taken captive.

7The eighth year — he gives an order to honor the law of the Buddha

八年,遣使新羅修好,新羅王遣姪實聖為質。三月,下敎:崇信佛法求福。命有司,立國社,修宗廟。夏五月,王薨。葬於故國壤,號為故國壤王。

In the eighth year, he sent an envoy to Silla to make good relations, and the king of Silla sent his nephew Silseong as a hostage.

In the third month he gave out an order, that the law of the Buddha be honored and believed and that blessing be sought in it. He commanded the offices in charge to set up the altar of the land and the grain of the country, and to put the ancestral shrine in order.

In summer, the fifth month, the king died. He was buried at Gogugyang, and was called King Gogugyang (故國壤王).
