Geography — Baekje百濟
1The borders and capitals of Baekje
The Hou Han shu says, "The three Han are seventy-eight countries in all, and Baekje is one of them." The Bei shi says, "Baekje reaches Silla in the east, and to the southwest it is bounded altogether by the great sea, and in the north it touches the Han River. Its capital is called Geobalseong, and also Gomaseong, and outside it there are five more fortresses of the quarters." The Tongdian says, "Baekje borders Silla in the south, reaches Goguryeo in the north, and is bounded by the great sea in the west." The Jiu Tang shu says, "Baekje is another branch of Buyeo. To the northeast is Silla, and crossing the sea westward one comes to Yuezhou, and crossing the sea southward one comes to Wa, and to the north is Goguryeo. Where its king dwells there are two fortresses, east and west." The Xin Tang shu says, "Baekje has Yuezhou for its western border and Wa to the south, both of them across the sea, and Goguryeo to the north."
Look into the old records. Onjo, the third son of King Dongmyeong, came from Jolbon Buyeo to Wiryeseong in the third year of Hongjia of the Former Han, a gyemyo year, set up his capital and called himself king. Three hundred and eighty-nine years passed, and at King Geunchogo, the thirteenth of the line, Baekje took the southern Pyongyang of Goguryeo and had its capital at Hanseong. A hundred and five years passed, and King Munju, the twenty-second, moved the capital to Ungcheon. Sixty-three years passed, and King Seong, the twenty-sixth, moved the capital to Soburi and named the country Nam Buyeo. Down to King Uija, the thirty-first, a hundred and twenty-two years passed, and in the fifth year of Xianqing of the Tang, which was the twentieth year of King Uija's reign, Yusin of Silla together with Su Dingfang of the Tang attacked and subdued it.
In former times there were five bu, and they divided and governed thirty-seven commanderies, two hundred fortresses and seven hundred and sixty thousand households. The Tang divided that land and set up five governorates, Ungjin, Mahan, Dongmyeong and the rest, and then made the chiefs of the land the prefects of the governorates. Before long Silla took in all that land and set up the three provinces of Ungju, Jeonju and Muju with their commanderies and counties, and these, with the southern border of Goguryeo and the old land of Silla, made nine provinces.
