Isabu
1Isabu makes the state of Usan surrender with wooden lions
Isabu's surname was Kim, and he was a fourth-generation descendant of King Naemul. In the time of King Jidoro he was made an officer of the coast. He took up the shifts and stratagems of Geodo, and with the horse game he deceived the state of Gaya and took it.
When the thirteenth year came, the year imjin, he became the gunju of Haseullaju and planned to take in the state of Usan. He held that the people of that state were foolish and fierce, hard to bring down by awe but able to be subdued by a plan. So he had many wooden lions made, loaded them onto his warships by parts, and came to the sea coast of that state. There he gave out a false word: "If you do not submit, I will loose these fierce beasts at once and have you trampled to death." Those people were afraid, and so they surrendered.
In the eleventh year of the reign of King Jinheung, the first year of Taibao, Baekje took Dosalseong of Goguryeo, and Goguryeo took Geumhyeonseong of Baekje. The king seized the moment when the troops of the two countries were worn out and ordered Isabu to send out soldiers and strike them. He took the two fortresses, built them up higher, and left a thousand armored men to hold them. At that time Goguryeo sent troops to attack Geumhyeonseong, but they could not win and turned back, and Isabu pursued and struck them and won a great victory.
