Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Biographies The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Chandeok strikes a pagoda tree and dies

Haeron was a man of Moryang. His father Chandeok had a brave will and a fine integrity, and his name stood high in his day.

In the twenty-seventh year of Geonbok, an eulchuk year, King Jinpyeong the Great chose him and made him magistrate of Gajamseong. The next year, a byeongin year, in the tenth month of winter, Baekje raised a great army and came and attacked Gajamseong for more than a hundred days. King Jinpyeong ordered his generals to save it with the troops of Sangju, Haju and Sinju. They went and fought the men of Baekje, but they could not win, and they led their men back.

Chandeok was angry and bitter at this, and said to his soldiers, "The commanders of the three provinces saw that the enemy was strong and did not advance, and the fortress was in danger and they did not save it. This is to be without right. Rather than live without right, it is better to die with right."

At this he was stirred and roused himself, and he fought and held the fortress at the same time, until the food was gone and the water dried up. Even then they ate the dead and drank urine, and he fought with all his strength and did not slacken.

When the first month of spring came the men were worn out and the fortress was about to break, and there was no way to make it whole again. Then he looked up to heaven and cried out loudly, "My king entrusted one fortress to me, and I could not keep it whole, and I am beaten by the enemy. I ask to die and become a great vengeful spirit, to eat up the men of Baekje and take this fortress back."

Then he bared his arm and glared with his eyes, and ran and struck a pagoda tree and died. With this the fortress fell, and the soldiers all surrendered.

Haeron was a little over twenty, and by his father's merit he was made daenama. In the fortieth year of Geonbok, a muin year, the king ordered Haeron to be commander of the Geumsan regiment, and with Byeonpum, the governor of Hansanju, he raised troops and fell upon Gajamseong and took it.

2Haeron dies on the spot where his father died

Baekje heard of this and raised troops and came, and Haeron and the others met them. When the troops had joined, Haeron said to the generals, "Long ago my father ended his life here, and now I too fight the men of Baekje here. This is the day of my death."

Then with a short weapon he went at the enemy, and he killed several men and died. The king heard of it and shed tears, and he gave to Haeron's house very generously and cared for it well. There was no one of that time who did not grieve and mourn, and they made a long song and sang it for him.
