Nulchoe訥催
1Nulchoe holds a lone fortress
Nulchoe was a man of Saryang, the son of Dobi who held the rank of daenama.
In the forty-first year of Geonbok in the reign of King Jinpyeong, a gimyo year, in the tenth month of winter, Baekje came in a great invasion. It divided its troops and surrounded and attacked six fortresses, Sokham, Aengjam, Gijam, Bongjam, Gihyeon and Yongchaek. The king ordered the five armies of Sangju, Haju, Gwidang, Beopdang and Seodang to go and save them.
When they arrived they saw that the lines of the Baekje troops were imposing and their blades could not be withstood, and they hung back and did not advance.
One man stood forward and said, "The great king has entrusted the five armies to the generals, and whether the country stands or falls lies in this one battle. The soldiers' saying is, 'See what can be done and advance. Know what is hard and draw back.' Now a strong enemy stands before us. If we go straight at them with no good plan, and things do not turn out as we wish, then it will be too late to be sorry."
The generals and their officers all thought this right, but they had already received the order and brought out the army, and they could not go back with nothing done. Before this the state had wished to build six fortresses at Nojin and the other places but had had no leisure for it, so they finished the building in that place and went home.
At this Baekje pressed its attacks harder still, and of the three fortresses Sokham, Gijam and Yongchaek some were wiped out and some surrendered. Nulchoe held firm with the three fortresses, and when he heard that the five armies had gone back without saving them, he was stirred to anger and shed tears, and said to his soldiers.
"In the mild air of the spring sun the grasses and the trees all put out flowers, but when the cold season comes it is the pine and the cypress alone that wither last."
2Nulchoe and his servant die together
"Now the lone fortress is without help, and day by day it grows more perilous. This is truly the season for a man of will and a man of right to give his loyalty to the full and make his name shine. What will you do?"
The soldiers brushed away their tears and said, "We do not dare hold our lives dear. We will follow your orders and nothing else."
When the fortress was about to fall, hardly any of the soldiers were left alive, yet every one of them fought to the death, and none had a thought of escaping meanly.
Nulchoe had one servant who was strong and shot well. Someone had once said, "A low man with a rare talent seldom fails to bring harm. This servant should be kept at a distance." Nulchoe did not listen.
When it came to this, the fortress fell and the bandits came in, and the servant drew his bow and held his arrows ready and stood in front of Nulchoe, and not one of his shots went to waste, and the bandits were afraid and could not come forward. One bandit came out from behind and struck Nulchoe with an axe, and he fell, and the servant turned and fought that man, and the two died together.
The king heard of it and grieved and mourned, and gave Nulchoe the rank of geupchan after his death.
