Chwido
1Chwido takes off his monk's robe
Chwido was a man of Saryang, the son of Chwibok who held the rank of nama, and the histories have lost his surname. There were three brothers. The eldest was Bugwa, the second Chwido, the youngest Pipsil.
Chwido had once left home to become a monk, and his name was Dook, and he lived at Siljesa.
In the time of King Taejong the Great, Baekje came and attacked Jocheonseong, and the great king raised an army and went out to fight, but nothing was settled. Then Dook said to his fellows, "I have heard that one who becomes a monk should first make his practice and his learning fine and return to his own nature, and next should raise up the working of the Way and bring good to others. I am a monk only in shape, and there is not one good thing in me worth taking. It would be better to follow the army and give my life and repay the country."
He took off his robe of the Law and put on a soldier's dress, and he changed his name to Chwido (驟徒), which means to run forward and be one of the ranks. Then he went to the Ministry of War and asked to be put with the Samcheon regiment, and at last he followed the army out to the field of the enemy. When the flags and the drums stood face to face, he took spear and sword and charged the line and fought with all his strength, and he killed several of the enemy and died.
Afterward, in the second year of Hamhyeong, a sinmi year, King Munmu the Great sent out troops and had them trample down the grain of the border land of Baekje. So they fought the men of Baekje south of Ungjin. At that time Bugwa fought as a regiment commander and died, and when merit was reckoned his was first.
In the first year of Munmyeong, a gapsin year, the bandits left from Goguryeo held Bodeokseong and rebelled, and King Sinmun the Great ordered his generals to strike them, and made Pipsil jegam of the Gwidang regiment. When he set out he said to his wife, "My two brothers have already died in the affairs of the king, and their names hang down and will not rot. Though I am not worthy, how can I fear death and live meanly? Today I part from you living, but in the end this is a parting by death. Stay well, and do not grieve."
2All three brothers are given the rank of sachan after death
When he faced the enemy line he went out alone and struck with fury, and he cut down several dozen men and died.
The great king heard of it and shed tears and sighed, and said, "Chwido knew the place where he should die, and he stirred the hearts of his brothers. Bugwa and Pipsil too were brave for what is right and did not spare themselves. Is that not splendid?" He gave all of them the rank of sachan after their deaths.
