Kim Heumun
1Kim Heumun does not seek a name
Kim Heumun was a descendant of King Naemil in the eighth generation. His father was Dalbok, who held the rank of japchan.
When Heumun was young and went about at the gate of the hwarang Munno, the company spoke of a man who had died in battle and left a name that lasted until now, and Heumun was stirred and shed tears, and his face showed that he was roused and wished to be his equal. Jeonmil, a monk of the same gate, said, "If this man goes against an enemy he will surely not come back."
In the sixth year of Yeonghwi, King Taejong the Great was angry that Baekje and Goguryeo together were blocking the border, and he planned to strike them. When he sent out the army he made Heumun daegam of the Nangdang.
From then on Heumun did not sleep at home. He combed his hair in the wind and washed in the rain, and he shared what was sweet and what was bitter with his soldiers.
They came to the land of Baekje and made their camp below Yangsan, and they meant to go forward and attack Jocheonseong. The men of Baekje rode through the night and came fast, and at first light they climbed the rampart and came in, and the Silla soldiers were startled and stumbled and could not steady themselves. The bandits took advantage of the disorder and struck hard, and the flying arrows gathered like rain.
Heumun set his horse across the way and gripped his spear and waited for the enemy, and Jeonji, who held the rank of daesa, tried to persuade him and said, "The bandits have risen out of the darkness, and men cannot tell one another apart a foot away. Though you die, there will be no one who knows it. And you are of the noble bone of Silla and the son-in-law of the great king. If you die at the hands of bandits, Baekje will boast of it, and our people will be deeply ashamed."
Heumun said, "A great man has already given his body to his country. Whether others know it or do not know it is all one. How would I dare seek a name?" He stood firm and did not move.
His follower took hold of the reins and urged him to go back, and Heumun drew his sword and swung it, and he fought the bandits and killed several men and died.
2The historian's comment — worthy men come out of the hwarang
At this Yepa the daegam and Jeokdeuk the sogam fought side by side and died.
Boyongna, commander of the Bogi regiment, heard that Heumun had died and said, "His bone rank was noble and his standing was splendid, and men held him dear, and even so he kept his integrity and died. How much more should Boyongna, whose life brings no good and whose death loses nothing?" Then he went at the enemy and killed two or three men and died.
The great king heard of it and was grieved and stricken, and after their deaths he gave Heumun and Yepa the rank of ilgilchan, and Boyongna and Jeokdeuk the rank of daenama. The people of that time heard of it and made the song Yangsanga and grieved for them.
Kim Busik comments.
The people of Silla were troubled that they had no way to know men, and they wished to have them gather in companies and go about together, so that they could watch how they acted and how they held to what is right, and then take them up and use them. So they chose young men of fair face and dressed them and named them hwarang and honored them. The companies that followed gathered like clouds. Some polished one another with the Way and with right, and some delighted one another with song and music, and they went about among the hills and streams, and there was no place so far that they did not reach it. By this the crooked and the straight among them were known, and the chosen ones were recommended to the court.
So Kim Daemun said, "Worthy ministers and loyal subjects stood out from this, and good generals and brave soldiers were born of it." This is what he meant.
The hwarang of three generations were some two hundred men and more, and their fair names and their fine deeds are all set down in the records. Heumun too was one of the hwarang companies. He was able to give his life in the affairs of the state, and it may be said that he did not shame his name.
