Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Biographies The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Yeolgi goes to Su Dingfang

The histories have lost Yeolgi's clan and surname.

In the first year of King Munmu, the emperor of Tang sent Su Dingfang to strike Goguryeo, and he surrounded Pyeongyangseong. Liu Demin, the commander of the Hamja route, passed on the order to the king of Silla to send army supplies to Pyeongyang.

The king ordered Kim Yusin, who held the rank of daegakgan, to carry four thousand seom of rice and twenty-two thousand two hundred and fifty seom of grain. They came to Jangsae, and in the wind and snow and the freezing cold many of the men and horses died of the cold. The men of Goguryeo knew that the troops were worn out and meant to fall upon them.

They were more than thirty thousand paces from the Tang camp and could not go forward, and they wished to send a letter, but it was hard to find the man for it.

At that time Yeolgi had gone with them as bogigam, and he came forward and said, "I am slow and dull, but I ask to be counted among those who go."

So with the officer Gugeun and the others, fifteen men in all, he took bow and sword and rode hard, and the men of Goguryeo saw them but could not block them. In two days they delivered the message to General Su, and the men of Tang heard it and were glad and comforted, and sent a letter back. Yeolgi returned in two days more, and Yusin thought well of his courage and gave him the rank of geupchan.

When the army came home Yusin said to the king, "Yeolgi and Gugeun are brave men of the whole world. I gave them the rank of geupchan as the case allowed, but it does not yet match what they did. I ask that you add to it the rank of sachan."

The king said, "Is not the grade of sachan too much?"

Yusin bowed twice and said, "Rank and stipend are vessels held in common, and they are the means of repaying merit. How can it be called too much?" The king allowed it.

2What came afterward to Yeolgi and Gugeun

Afterward, when Samgwang the son of Yusin held the government, Yeolgi went to him and asked to be made a commandery prefect, and he did not allow it.

Yeolgi said to Sungyeong, a monk of Jiwonsa, "My merit is great, and I asked for a commandery and did not get it. Has Samgwang perhaps forgotten me because his father is dead?" Sungyeong spoke with Samgwang, and Samgwang gave him the post of prefect of Samnyeonsan commandery.

Gugeun went with Wonjeonggong to build Sulseong at Seowon, and Wonjeonggong listened to what others said and thought him idle at the work, and had him beaten with the rod.

Gugeun said, "Once I went with Yeolgi into a land past all reckoning, and I did not bring shame on the order of the daegakgan, and the daegakgan did not call me useless but treated me as one of the country's best men. Now you punish me on empty words, and there is no greater shame in all my life than this."

Wonjeong heard of it, and to the end of his life he was ashamed and full of regret.
