Binyeongja
1Binyeongja settles on death
Binyeongja's town and clan and surname are not known.
In the first year of Queen Jindeok, a jeongmi year, Baekje came with a great army to attack the three fortresses of Musan, Gammul and Dongjam, and Yusin led ten thousand foot and horse and held them off. The Baekje troops were very keen, and though the Silla side fought hard they could not win, and their spirit scattered and their strength was worn out.
Yusin knew that Binyeongja had a will to fight with all his strength and go in deep, and he called him and said, "Only after the cold season comes do we know that the pine and the cypress wither last. Today's business is urgent. If not you, who can rouse himself and strike where they do not look for it, and stir the hearts of the men?" And with that he drank wine with him, and showed him warm regard.
Binyeongja bowed twice and said, "Now, out of a thick crowd and a wide company, you lay the matter on me alone. It may be said that you know me. Truly I should repay you with my death."
He went out and said to his servant Hapjeol, "Today I will die, for the country above and for the one who knows me below. My son Geojin is young in years, but he has a stout will, and he will surely wish to die with me. If father and son lay down their lives together, on whom will the people of the house lean? You and Geojin gather my bones well and go home and comfort his mother's heart."
When he had finished speaking he whipped his horse at once and held his spear across, and he charged the enemy line and struck down several men and died.
Geojin watched it and made to go after him, and Hapjeol begged him, "The master said that Hapjeol should go home with the young master and comfort the lady and set her mind at rest."
2All three of them die
"Now you would throw aside your father's order and cast away your mother's love. Can that be called filial duty?" And he held the reins and would not let go.
Geojin said, "To see my father die and live on meanly, how is that what is called a filial son?" At once he struck Hapjeol's arm with his sword and broke it, and he ran in among the enemy and fought and died.
Hapjeol said, "My heaven has fallen. What should I do but die?" He too crossed blades with them and died.
The soldiers saw the three of them die and were moved, and they pressed forward one ahead of another, and wherever they turned they broke the enemy's blades and threw down their lines, and they beat the bandit army heavily and took more than three thousand heads.
Yusin gathered the three bodies and took off his own robe and covered them, and he wept most bitterly. The great king heard of it and shed tears, and with rites he had them buried together at Banjisan, and his favor and his rewards to their wives and children and to their kin to the ninth degree were all the more generous.
