Pilbu was a man of Saryang. His father was Jondae, who held the rank of achan.
King Taejong the Great saw that Baekje and Goguryeo and the Malgal were drawing closer together and had become lips and teeth to one another, and that they were planning together to invade and seize, and he looked for a man loyal and brave and able to hold the border in peace, and made Pilbu magistrate of the county below Chiljungseong.
The next year, a gyeongsin year, in the seventh month of autumn, the king and the Tang army wiped out Baekje. At this Goguryeo hated Silla, and in the tenth month of winter it sent out troops and came to surround Chiljungseong.
Pilbu held the fortress and fought for more than twenty days. The general of the bandits saw that the Silla soldiers gave their whole heart and fought without looking back to what lay behind them, and he thought the place could not be taken at a stroke, and was about to lead his men away.
Then Bisap, a traitorous officer who held the rank of daenama, secretly sent a man to tell the bandits that the food in the fortress was gone and its strength spent, and that if they attacked it would surely surrender. So the bandits fought again.
Pilbu learned of it and drew his sword and cut off Bisap's head and threw it outside the wall. Then he said to his soldiers, "A loyal subject and a man of right may die, but he does not bend. Strive, and strive hard. Whether this fortress stands or falls lies in this one battle."
At this he shook his fist and gave a single shout, and even the sick men all rose and pressed forward to climb the wall first. But their spirit was worn out and spent, and more than half of them were dead or wounded.
The bandits took the wind and set fires, and they attacked the fortress and burst inside. Pilbu, with Bonsuk who held the rank of sanggan, and Moji and Mije and the others, faced the bandits and shot at them. The flying arrows were like rain, and his body was pierced and broken, and the blood ran down to his heels, and then he fell and died.
The great king heard of it and wept most bitterly, and gave him the rank of geupchan after his death.
