Gyebaek階伯
1Gyebaek dies at Hwangsan
階伯，百濟人，仕為達率。唐顯慶五年庚申，高宗以蘇定方為神丘道大摠管，率師濟海，與新羅伐百濟。階伯為將軍，簡死士五千人拒之，曰：「以一國之人，當唐、羅之大兵，國之存亡，未可知也。恐吾妻孥，沒為奴婢，與其生辱，不如死快。」遂盡殺之。至黃山之野，設三營，遇新羅兵將戰，誓衆曰：「昔句踐以五千人，破吳七十萬衆，今之日，宜各奮勵決勝，以報國恩。」遂鏖戰，無不以一當千，羅兵乃却。如是進退，至四合，力屈以死。
Gyebaek was a man of Baekje. He served in office and became dalsol.
In the fifth year of Hyeongyeong of Tang, a gyeongsin year, Gaozong made Su Dingfang grand commander of the marching army of the Singu route, and had him lead his forces across the sea and join Silla in attacking Baekje.
Gyebaek became a general. He chose five thousand men who were ready to die and went out to block them, and he said, "With the men of one country we stand against the great armies of Tang and Silla. Whether the country lives or falls cannot be known. I fear that my wife and my children will be taken and made slaves. Rather than live in shame, it is better to die and be done with it." Then he killed his wife and his children.
He reached the field of Hwangsan and set out three camps. He met the Silla troops, and as he was about to fight he swore to his men, "Long ago Goujian broke a host of seven hundred thousand men of Wu with five thousand men. Today let each of you rouse himself and strive to win, and so repay the kindness of the country."
Then they fought to the death, and there was not one who did not stand against a thousand, and the Silla troops fell back. They advanced and withdrew in this way until the fourth clash, and then his strength gave way and he died.
