Hyangdeok向德
1Hyangdeok
Hyangdeok was a man of Panjeok village in Ungcheonju. His father's name was Seon and his courtesy name was Bangil. He was gentle and good by nature, and the village held up his conduct as an example. His mother's name is lost. Hyangdeok too was spoken of in his time for his filial devotion.
In the fourteenth year of Cheonbo, an eulmi year, the harvest failed and the people went hungry, and a plague came on top of it. His father and mother were starving and ill as well, and his mother had a boil besides, and both were close to death. Hyangdeok did not take off his clothes by day or by night, and he gave his whole heart to comforting them. But he had nothing to feed them with, so he cut the flesh of his thigh and gave it to them to eat. He also sucked his mother's boil, and he brought them both to ease.
The village office reported it to the province, and the province reported it to the king. The king sent down an order and gave him three hundred seom of grain, one house, and a portion of allotted land, and he commanded the office in charge to set up a stone and write the matter on it so that it would be known. To this day people call that place Hyoga-ri (孝家里).
