Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Biographies The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Mulgyeja

Mulgyeja was a man of the time of Nahae Isageum. His house had been plain and lowly for generations, but he was a man who would not be bound, and from his youth he held a great purpose.

At that time the eight states of Posang joined in a plan and attacked the state of Ara, and an envoy of Ara came and asked for rescue. The isageum had Naeeum, the grandson of the king, lead the troops of the nearby districts and of the six bu and go to the rescue, and they broke the troops of the eight states.

In that fight Mulgyeja had great merit, but the grandson of the king hated him, and so his merit was not written down.

Someone said to Mulgyeja, "Your merit is the greatest of all, and it is not set down. Do you not resent it?"

He said, "What resentment should there be?"

Someone said, "Why not let the king hear of it?"

Mulgyeja said, "To boast of merit and to seek a name is what a man of purpose does not do. I should only strive in my purpose and wait for a later day."

Three years after, men of the three states of Golpo and Chilpo and Gosapo came to attack Galhwaseong, and the king led out troops to the rescue and broke the armies of the three states badly. Mulgyeja cut down and took several tens of heads, but when merit was weighed he again got nothing.

Then he said to his wife, "I have heard that the way of a subject is to give up his life when he sees danger and to forget his body when he meets hardship. The fighting at Posang and at Galhwa in the days past may be called dangerous and hard, and I could not give up my life and forget my body so that others heard of it. With what face shall I go out into the market and the court?"

In the end he let down his hair and took up his geomungo and went into Sachesan, and he did not come back.
