Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Biographies The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Master Baekgyeol

It is not known what sort of man Master Baekgyeol was. He lived below Nangsan, and his house was very poor, and his clothes were patched in a hundred places and hung upon him like a quail, and the people of the time called him Master Baekgyeol of Dongni.

He had long admired the way Rong Qiqi lived, and he kept a geomungo always with him, and everything that made him glad or angry or sad or merry or ill at ease he poured out through the geomungo.

The year was drawing to its close, and in the neighboring village they were pounding millet. His wife heard the sound of the pestle and said, "Everyone else has millet to pound, and we alone have none. How shall we see out the year?"

The master looked up to heaven and sighed. "Dying and living have their appointed lot, and wealth and rank rest with heaven. What comes cannot be turned away, and what goes cannot be chased. Why should you grieve? I will make the sound of the pestle for you, and comfort you with it."

Then he played the geomungo and made the sound of the pestle, and it was handed down in the world, and its name is Daeak (碓樂).
