《南次二經》之首,曰柜山,西臨流黃,北望諸毗,東望長右。英水出焉,西南流注于赤水,其中多白玉,多丹粟。有獸焉,其狀如豚,有距,其音如狗吠,其名曰貍力,見則其縣多土功。有鳥焉,其狀如鴟而人手。其音如痺,其名曰鴸,名自號也,見則其縣多放士。
The first of the Second Guide to the Southern Mountains is Mount Ju. On the west it looks down on Liuhuang, on the north it looks out to Zhupi, and on the east it looks out to Changyou. The Ying River rises here and flows southwest into the Chi River. In its waters there is much white jade, and much red cinnabar fine as millet. There is a beast here shaped like a pig, with spurs. Its voice is like a dog barking. It is called lili, and when it appears there is much earthwork in that district. There is a bird here shaped like a kite, and its feet are like human hands. Its voice is like the cry of a bi, and it is called zhu. It calls out its own name. When it appears there are many cast-out officers in that district.

尸子曰:水方折者有玉,貢折者有珠
The Shizi says, "Where the water breaks square there is jade, and where it breaks curved there are pearls."
細丹砂如
It is like fine cinnabar.
其腳如人手,鴟音處脂反
Its feet are like human hands. 鴟 is the 處 and 脂 spelling.

The name is pronounced zhu.
東南四百五十里曰長右之山,無草木,多水。有獸焉,其狀如禺而四耳,其名長右,其音如吟,見則郡縣大水。
Four hundred and fifty li to the southeast lies Mount Changyou. There are no plants or trees, and there is much water. There is a beast here shaped like a monkey, with four ears. It is called changyou, and its voice is like groaning. When it appears there is a great flood in that district.

It is like the sound of a person groaning.
又東三百四十里,曰堯光之山,其陽多玉,其陰多金。有獸焉,其狀如人而彘鬛,穴居而冬蟄,其名曰猾褢,其音如斲木,見則縣有大繇。
Three hundred and forty li further east lies Mount Yaoguang. On its sunny side there is much jade, and on its shaded side much metal. There is a beast here shaped like a man, with the mane of a boar. It lives in a burrow and hibernates in winter. It is called huahuai, and its voice is like wood being hewn. When it appears there is a great levy of labor in that district.

如人斫木聲
It is like the sound of a person chopping wood.
謂作役也。或曰其繇亂
This means that labor is raised. Some say instead that its labor levies fall into disorder.

Three hundred and fifty li further east lies Mount Yu. Below it there is much water, and above it there is much rain. There are no plants or trees, and there are many vipers.

Southwest of Zhuqi county in Donghai today there is a Mount Yu, and that is where Gun was put to death. But if the distances given here are reckoned, they do not agree, so it seems not to be that place.

Three hundred and seventy li further east lies Mount Jufu. There are no plants or trees, and there is much gold and jade.

Today it lies south of Yuyao county and north of Zhangju county in Kuaiji. It is said that these two counties took their names from this mountain. It is seen in the Zhangshi dilizhi.
又東五百里,曰浮玉之山,北望具區,東望諸毗。有獸焉,其狀如虎而牛尾,其音如吠犬,其名曰彘,是食人。苕水出于其陰,北流注于具區。其中多鮆魚。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Fuyu. On the north it looks out to Juqu, and on the east it looks out to Zhupi. There is a beast here shaped like a tiger, with the tail of an ox. Its voice is like a barking dog. It is called zhi, and it eats people. The Tiao River rises on its shaded side and flows north into Juqu. In its waters there are many ji fish.

Juqu is the Taihu southwest of Wu county today. The Shangshu calls it Zhenze.
水名
It is the name of a river.
鮆魚,狹薄而長頭。大者尺餘,太湖中今饒之。一名刀魚,音祚啓反
The ji fish is narrow and thin, with a long head. The large ones are a little more than a chi, and the Taihu has plenty of them today. It is also called the daoyu. It is the 祚 and 啓 spelling.
又東五百里,曰成山,四方而三壇,其上多金玉,其下多青雘。𨴯水出焉,而南流注于虖勺,其中多黃金。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Cheng. It is square, and its terraces are piled in three tiers. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there is much qinghuo. The Zhuo River rises here and flows south into Hushao. In its waters there is much yellow gold.

It is shaped as if men had built it, with the terraces piled one on another. Cheng means no more than piled.

In Yongchang today gold like chaff comes out of the water and lies mixed in the sand. The Shizi says, "From clear water come yellow gold and yuying."
又東五百里,曰會稽之山,四方,其上多金玉,其下多砆石。勺水出焉,而南流注於湨。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Kuaiji. It is square. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there is much fu stone. The Shao River rises here and flows south into the Ju.

Today it lies south of Shanyin county in Kuaiji. On it are the tomb and the well of Yu.

Fu is the great stone called wufu, and it is like jade. Today it comes from Linxiang in Changsha. Its ground is red with white markings, and its color is a dusky green, not clear.

The name is pronounced ju.
又東五百里,曰夷山。無草木,多沙石,湨水出焉,而南流注于列塗。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Yi. There are no plants or trees, and there is much sand and stone. The Ju River rises here and flows south into Lietu.
又東五百里,曰僕勾之山,其上多金玉,其下多草木,無鳥獸,無水。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Pugou. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there are many plants and trees. There are no birds or beasts, and there is no water.
又東五百里,曰咸陰之山,無草木,無水。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Xianyin. There are no plants or trees, and there is no water.
又東四百里,曰洵山,其陽多金,其陰多玉。有獸焉,其狀如羊而無口,不可殺也,其名曰䍺。洵水出焉,而南流注于閼之澤,其中多芘蠃。
Four hundred li further east lies Mount Xun. On its sunny side there is much gold, and on its shaded side much jade. There is a beast here shaped like a sheep, with no mouth. It cannot be killed, and it is called huan. The Xun River rises here and flows south into the E Marsh. In its waters there is much biluo.

Four hundred li further east lies Mount Hushao. On its heights there are many zi and nan trees, and below there are many thorn trees and gouqi trees. The Pang River rises here and flows east into the sea.

梓,山楸也。枏,大木葉,似桑,今作楠,音南。《爾雅》以爲柟
The zi is the mountain catalpa. The nan is a great tree whose leaves are like mulberry leaves. Today it is written 楠, and it is pronounced nan. The Erya takes it as 柟.
杞,枸杞也,子赤
The qi is the gouqi, and its fruit is red.
音滂沱之滂
滂 sounds the same as the pang of pangtuo.
又東五百里,曰區吳之山,無草木,多沙石。鹿水出焉,而南流注于滂水。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Ouwu. There are no plants or trees, and there is much sand and stone. The Lu River rises here and flows south into the Pang River.
又東五百里,曰鹿吳之山,上無草木,多金石。澤更之水出焉,而南流注于滂水。水有獸焉,名曰蠱雕,其狀如雕而有角,其音如嬰兒之音,是食人。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Luwu. On its heights there are no plants or trees, and there is much metal and stone. The Zegeng River rises here and flows south into the Pang River. There is a beast in the water called gudiao. It is shaped like an eagle, but it has horns. Its voice is like the voice of an infant, and it eats people.
東五百里,曰漆吳之山,無草木,多博石,無玉。處于東海,望丘山,其光載出載入,是惟日次。
Five hundred li east lies Mount Qiwu. There are no plants or trees, and there is much bo stone, and no jade. It sits on the Eastern Sea and looks out to the hills and mountains, and its light now comes forth and now goes in. This is the resting place of the sun.

凡《南次二經》之首,自柜山至于漆吳之山,凡十七山,七千二百里。其神狀皆龍身而鳥首。其祠:毛用一璧瘞,糈用稌。
In all, the first section of the Second Guide to the Southern Mountains runs from Mount Ju to Mount Qiwu, seventeen mountains in all, seven thousand two hundred li. The gods there all have the body of a dragon and the head of a bird. For the sacrifice, a victim whole in coat is used, and one bi jade is buried, and for the offering rice glutinous rice is used.
