《南次三經》之首,曰天虞之山,其下多水,不可以上。
The first of the Third Guide to the Southern Mountains is Mount Tianyu. Below it there is much water, and it cannot be climbed.
東五百里,曰禱過之山,其上多金玉,其下多犀、兕,多象。有鳥焉,其狀如鵁,而白首、三足、人面,其名曰瞿如,其鳴自號也。泿水出焉,而南流注于海。其中有虎蛟,其狀魚身而蛇尾,其音如鴛鴦,食者不腫,可以已痔。
Five hundred li east lies Mount Daoguo. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there are many rhinoceroses and one-horned oxen, and many elephants. There is a bird here shaped like a jiao, with a white head, three feet, and a human face. It is called juru, and its cry calls out its own name. The Yin River rises here and flows south into the sea. In its waters there is the hujiao, shaped with the body of a fish and the tail of a snake. Its voice is like a mandarin duck's, and one who eats it does not swell, and it can cure piles.

The rhinoceros is like a water buffalo. Its head is like a pig's and its legs are short, and its feet, like an elephant's, have three hooves. Its belly is large and its color black, and it has three horns, one on the crown, one on the forehead, and one on the nose. The one on the nose is small but does not fall off, and it is the horn it feeds with. It likes to chew thorn wood, and its mouth is always running with bloody foam. The one-horned ox is also like a water buffalo. Its color is blue-green, it has one horn, and it weighs three thousand jin.
象,獸之最大者。長鼻。大者牙長一丈。性妬,不畜淫子
The elephant is the largest of beasts. Its trunk is long, and in the large ones the tusks are a zhang long. It is jealous by nature, and it does not rear a wanton calf.
鵁似鳧而小腳近尾。音骹箭之骹
The jiao is like a wild duck but smaller, and its legs are close to its tail. It sounds the same as the qiao of qiaojian.

The name is pronounced ju.

The name of the river is pronounced yin.
蛟似蛇,四足,龍屬
The jiao is like a snake with four feet, and it is of the dragon kind.
又東五百里,曰丹穴之山,其上多金玉。丹水出焉,而南流注于渤海。有鳥焉,其狀如雞,五采而文,名曰鳳皇,首文曰德,翼文曰義,背文曰禮,膺文曰仁,腹文曰信。是鳥也,飲食自然,自歌自舞,見則天下安寧。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Danxue. On its heights there is much gold and jade. The Dan River rises here and flows south into the Bo Sea. There is a bird here shaped like a chicken, of five colors and patterned. It is called the fenghuang. The pattern on its head is called virtue, the pattern on its wings is called righteousness, the pattern on its back is called ritual propriety, the pattern on its breast is called benevolence, and the pattern on its belly is called good faith. This bird drinks and eats as nature provides, and it sings of itself and dances of itself. When it appears, all under heaven is at peace.

The Bo Sea is the place where the seashore bends and juts out.
漢時鳳鳥數出,高五六尺,五采。莊周說鳳,文字與此有異。《廣雅》云:鳳,雞頭、鷰頷、蛇頸、龜背、魚尾。雌曰凰,雄曰鳳
In the time of Han the fenghuang appeared several times, five or six chi tall and of five colors. When Zhuang Zhou speaks of the fenghuang, his words differ from these. The Guangya says that the fenghuang has the head of a chicken, the jowls of a swallow, the neck of a snake, the back of a turtle, and the tail of a fish. The female is called huang and the male is called feng.
又東五百里,曰發爽之山,無草木,多水,多白猿。汎水出焉,而南流注于渤海。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Fashuang. There are no plants or trees, and there is much water and many white apes. The Fan River rises here and flows south into the Bo Sea.
又東四百里,至於旄山之尾,其南有谷,曰育遺,多怪鳥,凱風自是出。
Four hundred li further east you come to the tail of Mount Mao. To its south there is a valley called Yuyi. There are many strange birds, and the south wind comes forth from here.

Kaifeng is the south wind.
又東四百里,至于非山之首,其上多金玉,無水,其下多蝮虫。
Four hundred li further east you come to the head of Mount Fei. On its heights there is much gold and jade and no water, and below there are many vipers.
又東五百里,曰陽夾之山,無草木,多水。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Yangjia. There are no plants or trees, and there is much water.
又東五百里,曰灌湘之山,上多木,無草;多怪鳥,無獸。
Five hundred li further east lies Mount Guanxiang. On its heights there are many trees and no plants. There are many strange birds and no beasts.

Five hundred li further east lies Mount Ji. On its heights there is much gold, and below there is much danhuo. The Hei River rises here and flows south into the sea. In its waters there is the zhuan fish, shaped like a crucian carp but with the hair of a pig. Its voice is like a pig's, and when it appears there is a great drought under heaven.

Huo is the red kind. Some call it huo instead, which is fine cinnabar. It is seen in the Shangshu. It sounds the same as the huo of chihuo.

鱄 sounds the same as the tuan of tuanshan.
又東四百里,曰令丘之山,無草木,多火。其南有谷焉,曰中谷,條風自是出。有鳥焉,其狀如梟,人面四目而有耳,其名曰顒,其鳴自號也,見則天下大旱。
Four hundred li further east lies Mount Lingqiu. There are no plants or trees, and there is much fire. To its south there is a valley called Zhonggu, and the east wind comes forth from here. There is a bird here shaped like an owl, with a human face, four eyes, and ears. It is called yong, and its cry calls out its own name. When it appears there is a great drought under heaven.

The northeast wind is called tiaofeng. The Liji says, "When the tiaofeng comes, the lightly bound are let out and those long held are looked into."
音娛
The name is pronounced yong.
又東三百七十里,曰侖者之山,其上多金玉,其下多青雘。有木焉,其狀如穀而赤理其汗如漆,其味如飴,食者不饑,可以釋勞,其名曰白䓘,可以血玉。
Three hundred and seventy li further east lies Mount Lunzhe. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there is much qinghuo. There is a tree here shaped like a paper mulberry, with red grain. Its sap is like lacquer and its taste is like malt sugar. One who eats it does not go hungry, and it can dispel weariness. It is called baigao, and it can put a luster on jade.

The name is pronounced lùn, as in lunshuo. Some say lún instead.
或作睪蘇。睪蘇一名白䓘,見《廣雅》,音羔
Some texts write gaosu. Gaosu is also called baigao. It is seen in the Guangya, and it is pronounced gao.
血謂可用染玉作光彩
To say xue means that it can dye jade and bring out its colors.
又東五百八十里,曰禺槀之山,多怪獸,多大蛇。
Five hundred and eighty li further east lies Mount Yugao. There are many strange beasts and many great snakes.
又東五百八十里,曰南禺之山,其上多金玉,其下多水。有穴焉,水出輒入,夏乃出,冬則閉。佐水出焉,而東南流注于海,有鳳皇、鵷鶵。
Five hundred and eighty li further east lies Mount Nanyu. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there is much water. There is a cave here, and when the water comes out it goes straight in again. In summer it comes out, and in winter it is shut. The Zuo River rises here and flows southeast into the sea. There are fenghuang and yuanchu here.

凡《南次三經》之首,自天虞之山以至南禺之山,凡一十四山,六千五百三十里。其神皆龍身而人面。其祠皆一白狗祈,糈用稌。
In all, the first section of the Third Guide to the Southern Mountains runs from Mount Tianyu to Mount Nanyu, fourteen mountains in all, six thousand five hundred and thirty li. The gods there all have the body of a dragon and the face of a man. For the sacrifice they all pray with one white dog, and for the offering rice glutinous rice is used.
