First Guide to the Western Mountains西山經之首
西山經華山之首,曰錢來之山,其上多松,其下多洗石。有獸焉,其狀如羊而馬尾,名曰羬羊,其脂可以已腊。
The first mountain of the Hua range in the Western Mountains is Mount Qianlai. On its heights there are many pines, and below there is much washing stone. There is a beast here shaped like a sheep but with the tail of a horse. It is called the xianyang sheep, and its fat can cure chapped skin.

It can be used to rub the body clean when bathing and to take off the grime. Chuang (磢) is spelled from chu (初) and liang (兩).

In the country of the Great Yuezhi today there is a large sheep as big as a donkey, with the tail of a horse. When the Erya says, "A sheep of six feet is called a xian," it means this sheep. Xian (羬) sounds like zhen (針).
治體皴。腊音昔
It cures chapped skin. Xi (腊) sounds like xi (昔).
西四十五里,曰松果之山。濩水出焉,北流注于渭,其中多銅。有鳥焉,其名曰䳋渠,其狀如山雞,黑身赤足,可以已𦢊。
Forty five li to the west is Mount Songguo. The Huo River rises here and flows north into the Wei. In its waters there is much copper. There is a bird here called the tongqu. It is shaped like a mountain pheasant, with a black body and red feet. It can cure chapped skin.

Tong (䳋) sounds like the tong of tonggong (彤弓).

This means skin that cracks and flakes up. It is spelled from po (叵) and bo (駮).
又西六十里,曰太華之山,削成而四方,其高五千仞,其廣十里,鳥獸莫居。有蛇焉,名曰肥𧔥,六足四翼,見則天下大旱。
Sixty li further west is Mount Taihua. It is cut straight on four sides, five thousand ren high and ten li across. No bird or beast lives there. There is a snake here called the feiyi. It has six feet and four wings, and when it appears there is a great drought under heaven.

This is Mount Huayin, the Western Peak. Today it lies southwest of Huayin county in Hongnong.
今山形上大下小,峭峻也
The shape of the mountain today is large above and small below, steep and sheer.
仞,八尺也。上有明星玉女,持玉漿得上,服之即成仙。道險僻不通,時含神霧云
A ren is eight feet. On the summit is the Jade Maiden of the Bright Star, who climbs up bearing a jade draught, and one who drinks it becomes an immortal at once. They say the road is steep and out of the way and does not go through, and that from time to time the peak holds a divine mist.
湯時此蛇見於陽山下。復有肥遺蛇,疑是同名
In the time of King Tang this snake appeared below Mount Yang. There is another snake called the feiyi, so the names may be the same.
又西八十里,曰小華之山,其木多荊杞,其獸多㸲牛,其陰多磬石,其陽多㻬琈之玉,鳥多赤鷩,可以禦火,其草有萆荔,狀如烏韭,而生於石上,亦緣木而生,食之已心痛。
Eighty li further west is Mount Xiaohua. Its trees are mostly thorn and wolfberry, and its beasts are mostly the zuo ox. On its shaded side there is much chiming stone, and on its sunny side much tufu jade. Its birds are mostly the red bie, which can ward off fire. Among its plants there is the bili, shaped like the wujiu moss. It grows on the rocks and climbs the trees as well, and eating it cures pain in the heart.

This is Mount Shaohua.

In the hills of Huayang today there are many mountain oxen and mountain goats, and the flesh of each weighs a thousand catties. The ox is this ox. It sounds like zuo (昨).
可以爲樂石
It can be made into stone for musical instruments.
㻬琈玉,名所未詳也。雩浮兩音
The name of tufu jade is not known in detail. It has the two sounds yu (雩) and fu (浮).
赤鷩,山雞之屬。胷腹、洞赤、冠金皆黃頭綠尾,中有赤毛,彩鮮明。音作蔽,或作鱉
The red bie is a kind of mountain pheasant. Its breast and belly are red all over, its crest is gold, its head is wholly yellow and its tail green, and among them are red feathers of bright color. It is read bi (蔽), and it is also read bie (鱉).
萆荔,香草也。蔽戾兩音
The bili is a fragrant plant. It has the two sounds bi (蔽) and li (戾).
鳥韭在屋者曰邪,在牆者曰垣衣
When the wujiu grows on a roof it is called xie, and when it grows on a wall it is called yuanyi.
又西八十里,曰符禺之山,其陽多銅,其陰多鐵。其上有木焉,名曰文莖,其實如棗,可以已聾。其草多條,其狀如葵,而赤華黃實,如嬰兒舌,食之使人不惑。符禺之水出焉,而北流注于渭。其獸多蔥聾,其狀如羊而赤鬛。其鳥多鴖,其狀如翠而赤喙,可以禦火。
Eighty li further west is Mount Fuyu. On its sunny side there is much copper, and on its shaded side much iron. On its heights there is a tree called the wenjing. Its fruit is like a jujube, and it can cure deafness. Its plants are mostly the tiao, shaped like a mallow, with red flowers and yellow fruit like the tongue of an infant. Eating it keeps a person from being deluded. The Fuyu River rises here and flows north into the Wei. Its beasts are mostly the conglong, shaped like a sheep but with a red mane. Its birds are mostly the min, shaped like a kingfisher but with a red beak, and it can ward off fire.

Sixty li further west is Mount Shicui. Its trees are mostly palm and nanmu, and its plants are mostly the tiao, shaped like a chive, with white flowers and black fruit. Eating it cures scabies. On its sunny side there is much tufu jade, and on its shaded side much copper. The Guan River rises here and flows north into the Yu. In its waters there is flowing ochre, and smearing it on oxen and horses keeps them free of illness.

The palm tree is about three zhang high and has no side branches. Its leaves are large and round. The branches grow at the top, and the fruit is wrapped about with layers of husk. One layer of husk makes one joint, and it can be twisted into rope. It is also called the binglü. It sounds like the jun of Ma Jun (馬駿).

Zhe (赭) is red earth.
今人亦以朱塗牛角,云以辟惡。或作角
People today also smear cinnabar on the horns of oxen, saying that it drives off evil. Some write it as jiao (角).
又西七十里,曰英山,其上多杻橿,其陰多鐵,其陽多赤金。禺水出焉,北流注于招水,其中多䰷魚,其狀如鼈,其音如羊。其陽多箭䉋,其獸多㸲牛羬羊。有鳥焉,其狀如鶉,黃身而赤喙,其名曰肥遺,食之已癘,可以殺蟲。
Seventy li further west is Mount Ying. On its heights there are many niu and jiang trees; on its shaded side there is much iron, and on its sunny side much red metal. The Yu River rises here and flows north into the Zhao. In its waters there are many fang fish, shaped like a soft shelled turtle, and their voice is like a sheep. On its sunny side there is much jian bamboo and mei bamboo, and its beasts are mostly the zuo ox and the xianyang sheep. There is a bird here shaped like a quail, with a yellow body and a red beak. It is called the feiyi, and eating it cures pestilence and can kill worms.

The niu resembles the cherry tree but with fine leaves. It is also called the tujiang, and it sounds like niu (紐). The jiang is fit timber for carts, and it sounds like jiang (姜).

In Hanzhong commandery today mei bamboo grows, thick in the wall and long in the joint, with deep roots. Its shoots come up underground in winter, and people dig them out and eat them. Mei (䉋) is spelled from jian (間) and mei (媚).
癘,疫病也,或曰惡瘡。韓子曰:癘人憐主
Li is a pestilence. Some say it is a foul sore. The Hanzi says, "A leper pities the ruler."
又西五十二里,曰竹山,其上多喬木,其陰多鐵。有草焉,其名曰黃雚,其狀如樗,其葉如麻,白華而赤實,其狀如赭,浴之已疥,又可以已胕。竹水出焉,北流注于渭,其陽多竹箭,多蒼玉。丹水出焉,東南流注于洛水,其中多水玉,多人魚。有獸焉,其狀如豚而白毛,大如笄而黑端,名曰毫彘。
Fifty two li further west is Mount Zhu. On its heights there are many tall trees, and on its shaded side much iron. There is a plant here called the huangguan. It is shaped like the ailanthus, its leaves are like hemp, its flowers are white and its fruit red, and the color of it is like red earth. Bathe in it and scabies is cured, and it can also cure swelling. The Zhu River rises here and flows north into the Wei. On its sunny side there is much small bamboo and much blue jade. The Dan River rises here and flows southeast into the Luo. In its waters there is much rock crystal and there are many renyu fish. There is a beast here shaped like a pig but with white hair, as thick as a hairpin and black at the tip. It is called the haozhi.

Ji (笄) is a kind of hairpin.
狟猪也。夾髀有麄豪,長數尺,能以脊上毫射物,亦自此爲牝牡狟,或作豭。吳楚呼爲鸞猪,亦此類也
It is the huanzhu. Beside its thighs are coarse bristles several feet long, and it can shoot things with the bristles on its back. It is also said to make itself male or female by this, and so it is called huan; some write it as jia (豭). In Wu and Chu they call it the luan pig, and that too is of this kind.
又西百二十里曰浮山,多盼木,枳葉而無傷,木蟲居之。有草焉,名曰薰草,麻葉而方莖,赤華而黑實,臭如蘼蕪,佩之可以已癘。
A hundred and twenty li further west is Mount Fu. There are many pan trees, which put out leaves like the trifoliate orange but do not wound, and wood insects live inside them. There is a plant here called the xuncao. Its leaves are like hemp and its stem is square, its flowers are red and its fruit black, and it smells like the miwu. Wear it at the belt and it can ward off pestilence.

The miwu is a fragrant plant. The Book of Changes says, "Its fragrance is like the orchid." It has the two sounds mei (眉) and wu (無).

Seventy li further west is Mount Yuci. The Qi River rises here and flows north into the Wei. On its heights there are many yu and jiang trees, and below much small bamboo. On its shaded side there is much red copper, and on its sunny side much yingyuan jade. There is a beast here shaped like a monkey but with long arms, and it throws well. It is called the xiao. There is a bird here shaped like an owl but with a human face and a single foot. It is called the tuofei. It appears in winter and hides away in summer, and one who wears its feathers does not fear thunder.

This too is among the pictures of the dreadful beasts, and it is like a macaque throwing things.
音肥
Fei (𩇯) sounds like fei (肥).
著其毛羽令人不畏天雷也,或作災
Fasten its feathers to the body and it keeps a person from fearing the thunder of heaven. Some write it as zai (災).
又西百五十里,曰時山,無草木。逐水出焉,北流注于渭,其中多水玉。
A hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Shi. There is no grass or tree. The Zhu River rises here and flows north into the Wei. In its waters there is much rock crystal.
又西百七十里,曰南山,上多丹粟。丹水出焉,北流注于渭。獸多猛豹,鳥多尸鳩。
A hundred and seventy li further west is Mount Nan. On its heights there is much cinnabar fine as millet. The Dan River rises here and flows north into the Wei. Its beasts are mostly the mengbao, and its birds are mostly the shijiu.

Four hundred and eight li further west is Mount Dashi. On its heights there are many paper mulberry and oak trees, and below many niu and jiang trees. On its shaded side there is much silver, and on its sunny side much white jade. The Cen River rises here and flows north into the Wei. The Qing River rises here and flows south into the Han.

North of Xiuwu county in Henei today, the Qing River also rises from Mount Hei.

Three hundred and twenty li further west is Mount Bozhong. The Han River rises here and flows southeast into the Mian, and the Xiao River rises here and flows north into the Tang. On its heights there is much taozhi and goudan bamboo. Its beasts are mostly rhinoceros, wild ox, bear and brown bear, and its birds are mostly the white han and the red bie. There is a plant here whose leaves are like the hui orchid and whose root is like the balloon flower. Its flowers are black and it bears no fruit. It is called the gurong, and eating it leaves a person without children.

The brown bear resembles a bear but is yellowish white. It is fierce and bold, and it can pull up trees.

The white han is the white pheasant. It is also called the han pheasant, and also the white pheasant.
蕙,香草、蘭屬也,或以蕙叶失之,音惠
The hui is a fragrant plant, of the orchid kind. To take it for the leaf of the hui is wrong. It sounds like hui (惠).
本,根也
Ben (本) is the root.
《爾雅釋草》曰:榮而不實謂之蓇,音骨
The Shi cao chapter of the Erya says, "What flowers and bears no fruit is called gu." It sounds like gu (骨).
又西三百五十里,曰天帝之山,上多椶枏,下多菅蕙。有獸焉,其狀如狗,名曰谿邊,席其皮者不蠱。有鳥焉,其狀如鶉,黑文而赤翁,名曰櫟,食之已痔。有草焉,其狀如葵,其臭如蘼蕪,名曰杜衡,可以走馬,食之已癭。
Three hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Tiandi. On its heights there are many palm and nanmu trees, and below much jian rush and hui orchid. There is a beast here shaped like a dog, and it is called the xibian. One who sits on its hide is not struck by gu poison. There is a bird here shaped like a quail, with black markings and a red ruff at the neck. It is called the li, and eating it cures piles. There is a plant here shaped like a mallow, and it smells like the miwu. It is called the duheng. It makes a horse run well, and eating it cures goiter.

Three hundred and eighty li to the southwest is Mount Tutu. The Se River rises here and flows west into the Zhuzi, and the Tu River rises here and flows south into the Jihuo. On its sunny side there is much cinnabar fine as millet, on its shaded side much silver and gold, and on its heights many cassia trees. There is a white stone here called the yu, and it can poison rats. There is a plant here shaped like the gaoba, with leaves like a mallow but red on the back. It is called the wutiao, and it can poison rats. There is a beast here shaped like a deer but with a white tail, the legs of a horse, the hands of a man and four horns. It is called the yingru. There is a bird here shaped like a kite but with the feet of a man. It is called the shusi, and eating it cures goiter.

A hundred and eighty li further west is Mount Huang. There is no grass or tree, and there is much small bamboo. The Pan River rises here and flows west into the Chi. In its waters there is much jade. There is a beast here shaped like an ox, dark and black, with large eyes. It is called the min. There is a bird here shaped like a horned owl, with green feathers and a red beak. Its tongue is like the tongue of a man and it can speak. It is called the yingwu.

In Huaili county in Shiping today there is a Mount Huang, and on it stands an old palace raised by Emperor Hui of Han. This does not seem to be the place.
音美目眄兮之眄。
Pan (盼) sounds like the mian in the line "How her lovely eyes glance aside."
鸚䳇舌似小儿舌,脚指前後各兩。扶南徼外出五色者,其亦有純赤、白者,大如鴈也
The yingwu has a tongue like the tongue of a small child, and two toes in front and two behind on each foot. Beyond the frontier of Funan there are ones of five colors, and there are also ones wholly red and ones white, as large as a wild goose.
又西二百里,曰翠山,其上多椶枏,其下多竹箭,其陽多黃金、玉,其陰多旄牛、麢、麝;其鳥多鸓,其狀如鵲,赤黑而兩首四足,可以禦火。
Two hundred li further west is Mount Cui. On its heights there are many palm and nanmu trees, and below much small bamboo. On its sunny side there is much gold and jade, and on its shaded side many yaks, ling antelope and musk deer. Its birds are mostly the lei, shaped like a magpie, red and black, with two heads and four feet. It can ward off fire.

Two hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Gui. It sits astride the Western Sea. There is no grass or tree, and there is much jade. The Qi River rises here and flows west into the sea. In its waters there is much colored stone and gold, and much cinnabar fine as millet.

Chun is the same as an embankment. It is spelled from zhang (章) and run (閏).

Colored stone is stone that has color, of the kind of the orpiment, azurite and malachite of today.
凡西經之首,自錢來之山至於騩山,凡十九山,二千九百五十七里。華山冢也,其祠之禮:太牢。羭山神也,祠之用燭,齋百日以百犧,瘞用百瑜,湯其酒百樽,嬰以百珪百璧。其餘十七山之屬,皆毛牷,用一羊祠之。燭者百草之未灰,白席采等純之。
In all, the first section of the First Guide to the Western Mountains runs from Mount Qianlai to Mount Gui, nineteen mountains in all, two thousand nine hundred and fifty seven li. Mount Hua is the chief mountain. The rite of its sacrifice uses the great offering. Mount Yu is where a god dwells, and torches are used at its sacrifice. One fasts a hundred days, uses a hundred victims and buries a hundred pieces of yu jade. A hundred casks of wine are warmed, and a hundred gui tablets and a hundred bi jades are set out for the offering. All that belongs to the other seventeen mountains is whole in coat and sound in body, and the sacrifice is made with a single sheep. What is called a torch is the hundred grasses not yet burned to ash. The white mat is edged round with colors.

Ying means to set things round about and sacrifice. Some say ying is the old character ying (罌), and that it means a bowl. In Xuzhou they say it is of the kind of the ying of gold in the Mu tianzi zhuan.
牷謂牲體全具也。《左傳》曰:「牷牲,肥腯者也。」
Quan means that the body of the victim is whole and complete. The Zuo zhuan says, "A whole victim is one that is fat and sleek."
純,緣也,五色純之等差。其文䌽也,《周禮》莞席紛純
