Second Guide to the Western Mountains西次二經
《西次二經》之首,曰鈐山,其上多銅,其下多玉,其木多杻、橿。
The first mountain in the Second Guide to the Western Mountains is Mount Qian. On its heights there is much copper, below there is much jade, and its trees are mostly the niu and the jiang.

音髠鉗之鉗,或作泠,又作塗。
Qian (鈐) sounds like the qian of kunqian (髠鉗). Some write it as ling (泠), and some as tu (塗).
西二百里,曰㤗冒之山,其陽多玉,其陰多鐵。浴水出焉,東流注于河,其中多藻玉,多白蛇。
Two hundred li to the west is Mount Taimao. On its sunny side there is much jade, and on its shaded side much iron. The Yu River rises here and flows east into the Yellow River. In its waters there is much zao jade and there are many white snakes.

Some write it as qin (秦).
藻玉,玉有符彩者,或作柬,音練。
Zao jade is jade that bears markings. Some write it as jian (柬), and it sounds like lian (練).

又西一百七十里,曰數歷之山,其上多黃金,其下多銀,其木多杻橿,其鳥多鸚䳇。楚水出焉,而南流注于渭,其中多白珠。
A hundred and seventy li further west is Mount Shuli. On its heights there is much gold, and below much silver. Its trees are mostly the niu and the jiang, and its birds are mostly the yingwu. The Chu River rises here and flows south into the Wei. In its waters there are many white pearls.

In the level marshes of Shu commandery today green pearls are found. The Shizi says, "Where the water turns in a circle there are pearls."
又西北五十里高山,其上多銀,其下多青碧、雄黃,其木多椶,其草多竹。涇水出焉,而東流注于渭,其中多磬石、青碧。
Fifty li further to the northwest is Mount Gao. On its heights there is much silver, and below much qingbi and realgar. Its trees are mostly palm, and its plants are mostly bamboo. The Jing River rises here and flows east into the Wei. In its waters there is much chiming stone and qingbi.

Bi too is of the jade kind. Today bi comes from Dongshan in Kuaiji county in Yuexi.
晉大興三年髙平郡界有山崩,其中出數千斤雄黃。
In the third year of Daxing in Jin a mountain fell in on the border of Gaoping commandery, and several thousand catties of realgar came out of it.
今涇水出安定,朝那縣西井頭山,至京兆髙陵縣入渭也
The Jing River today rises from Mount Jingtou west of Chaona county in Anding, and it reaches Gaoling county in Jingzhao and enters the Wei.
書曰:泗濱,浮磬是也。
When the Book of Documents speaks of the floating chiming stone on the bank of the Si, this is it.
西南三百里,曰女牀之山,其陽多赤銅,其陰多石涅,其獸多虎豹犀兕。有鳥焉,其狀如翟而五采文,名曰鸞鳥,見則天下安寧。
Three hundred li to the southwest is Mount Nüchuang. On its sunny side there is much red copper, and on its shaded side much shinie. Its beasts are mostly tiger, leopard, rhinoceros and wild ox. There is a bird here shaped like a di pheasant, with markings of five colors. It is called the luan bird, and when it appears all under heaven is at peace.

即楚石也,楚人名為涅石,秦名為羽涅也,本草經亦名曰石涅也。
It is chu stone. The people of Chu call it niestone, and in Qin they call it yunie. The Bencao jing also calls it shinie.
翟似雉而大長尾,或作𪇱。𪇱,鵰屬也。
The di resembles a pheasant but is larger and has a long tail. Some write it as diao (𪇱). The diao is of the eagle kind.
舊說鸞似鷄,瑞鳥也。周成王時,西戎獻之。
The old account says the luan resembles a fowl and is a bird of good omen. In the time of King Cheng of Zhou the Western Rong presented one.
又西二百里,曰龍首之山,其陽多黃金,其陽多鐵。苕水出焉,東南流注于涇水,其中多美玉。
Two hundred li further west is Mount Longshou. On its sunny side there is much gold, and on its shaded side much iron. The Tiao River rises here and flows southeast into the Jing. In its waters there is much fine jade.

Two hundred li further west is Mount Lutai. On its heights there is much white jade, and below much silver. Its beasts are mostly the zuo ox, the xianyang sheep and the white hao. There is a bird here shaped like a cock but with the face of a man. It is called the fuxi, and its cry is the calling of its own name. When it appears there is war.

Two hundred li to the southwest is Mount Niaowei. On its sunny side there is much chiming stone, on its shaded side much sandalwood and paper mulberry, and in its midst much nüchuang. The Niaowei River rises here and flows west into the Chi. In its waters there is much cinnabar fine as millet.

Four hundred li further west is Mount Xiaoci. On its heights there is much white jade, and below much red copper. There is a beast here shaped like an ape but with a white head and red feet. It is called the zhuyan, and when it appears there is great war.

Some copies write, "When it appears war arises there"; others write, "When it appears it becomes war."
又西三百里,曰大次之山,其陽多堊,其陰多碧,其獸多㸲牛、麢羊。
Three hundred li further west is Mount Daci. On its sunny side there is much white clay, and on its shaded side much bi. Its beasts are mostly the zuo ox and the ling antelope.

E is like earth and its color is very white. It sounds like e (惡).
又西四百里,曰薰吳之山,無草木,多金玉。
Four hundred li further west is Mount Xunwu. There is no grass or tree, and there is much gold and jade.
又西四百里,曰厎陽之山,其木多㮨、枏、豫章,其獸多犀、兕、虎、犳、㸲牛。
Four hundred li further west is Mount Diyang. Its trees are mostly the ji, the nanmu and the yuzhang, and its beasts are mostly rhinoceros, wild ox, tiger, zhuo and zuo ox.

Di (厎) sounds like zhi (㫖).
稷似松,有刺細理。音即。豫章,大木似楸葉,冬夏青生七年,而後復可知也。
The ji resembles the pine, with thorns and a fine grain. It sounds like ji (即). The yuzhang is a great tree with leaves like the catalpa. It grows green through winter and summer, and only after seven years can it be told apart.
犳,音之樂反。
Zhuo (犳) is spelled from zhi (之) and le (樂).
又西二百五十里,曰眾獸之山,其上多㻬琈之玉,其下多檀楮,多黃金,其獸多犀兕。
Two hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Zhongshou. On its heights there is much tufu jade, below much sandalwood and paper mulberry, and much gold. Its beasts are mostly rhinoceros and wild ox.
又西五百里,曰皇人之山,其上多金玉,其下多青雄黃。皇水出焉,西流注于赤水,其中多丹粟。
Five hundred li further west is Mount Huangren. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below much green realgar. The Huang River rises here and flows west into the Chi. In its waters there is much cinnabar fine as millet.

It is orpiment. Some say it is of the kind of azurite and cengqing.
又西三百里,曰中皇之山,其上多黃金,其下多蕙、棠。
Three hundred li further west is Mount Zhonghuang. On its heights there is much gold, and below much hui orchid and tang pear.

It is of the kind of the red tang pear. Some write hui (蕙) as gao (羔).
又西三百五十里,曰西皇之山,其陽多黃金,其陰多鐵,其獸多麋、鹿、㸲牛。
Three hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Xihuang. On its sunny side there is much gold, on its shaded side much iron, and its beasts are mostly the elk, the deer and the zuo ox.

The mi is as big as a small ox. It is of the deer kind.
又西三百五十里,曰萊山,其木多檀楮,其鳥多羅羅,是食人。
Three hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Lai. Its trees are mostly sandalwood and paper mulberry, and its birds are mostly the luoluo, which eat people.

The bird called the luoluo is not known in detail.
凡《西次二經》之首,自鈐山至於萊山,凡十七山,四千一百四十里。其十神者,皆人面而馬身。其七神皆人面而牛身,四足而一臂,操杖以行:是為飛獸之神;其祠之,毛用少牢,白菅為席。其十軰神者,其祠之,毛一雄雞,鈐而不糈;毛采。
In all, the first section of the Second Guide to the Western Mountains runs from Mount Qian to Mount Lai, seventeen mountains in all, four thousand one hundred and forty li. Ten of its gods all have the face of a man and the body of a horse. Seven of its gods all have the face of a man and the body of an ox, with four feet and one arm, and they walk leaning on a staff: these are the gods of the flying beasts. When sacrifice is made to them, the lesser offering is used, whole in coat, and the mat is made of white jian rush. When sacrifice is made to the ten ranked gods, one cock whole in coat is used, and a qian is set out but no offering rice. The coat is to be a colored one.

A sheep and a pig make the lesser offering.
音背。
Bei (軰) sounds like bei (背).
鈐,所用祭器名,所未詳也,或作思,訓祈不糈,祠不以米。
The qian is the name of a vessel used in sacrifice, and it is not known in detail. Some write it as si (思). To say that one prays but offers no rice means that no rice is used in the sacrifice.
言用雄色雞也。
It means that a colored cock is used.
